The Basics

Founded in 1987, Jarrah House is a residential treatment program based out of Little Bay, Australia. It provides safe housing and treatment for women in recovery from substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The facility is partially state-funded and aims to help women improve their lives in all facets rather than only offering them drug counseling.

Accommodations and Food

All told, Jarrah House has a total of 24 beds available for women in shared rooms, though only 13 of those are state-funded. In any case, bedrooms come with twin beds and are typically shared between two to four clients each. In addition to the beds, rooms also have desks, dressers, nightstands and storage space. The home itself is set up like any normal house with shared common areas, TV, outdoor walking areas and a fully-equipped kitchen. Throughout their stay, residents are expected to help cook and prepare their own meals.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff members determine their needs and develop their care plans. The program includes an on-site detox phase whenever applicable. Generally speaking, treatment at Jarrah House lasts for 10 weeks—four weeks for detox and six for treatment.

In the initial phase, participants go through a medically-supervised detox with medication management and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) as necessary. They also attend regular group therapy with CBT along with individual case management. Initially, group sessions cover topics including communication skills, stress management, relapse prevention, relationship skills and addiction as a disease. Once they’ve stabilized, the six-week treatment phase continues with evidence-based counseling with a new focus on DBT. Groups cover deeper topics and work on emotional regulation, personal relationships, family systems and psychological insight. In both of these phases, residents also participate in case management, yoga, art therapy, parenting classes, mindfulness groups and exercise. Throughout their stay, clients are expected to work a 12-step program as well.

The staff at Jarrah House consists of supervising doctors, RNs, LCSWs, art therapists, CADCs, child care professionals and additional Master’s-level counselors.

Extras

Beyond the services above, Jarrah House also allows women to bring their children with them to treatment for certain times throughout the day, provided they are under the age of eight. When clients complete a primary care plan, they can also work with the staff to develop comprehensive stepped down aftercare plans as well.

In Summary

Overall, Jarrah House provides comprehensive treatment for addiction and other behavioral health issues to women in Little Bay, Australia. The programs are partially government-funded and include evidence-based counseling, medical supervision, life skills groups and wraparound aftercare services. While those in need of more extensive psychiatric supervision may want to find additional help, Jarrah House remains a strong resource to women in the area.
