James K Marsh House
As part of the Counseling Center, Inc. organization in Ohio, the James K Marsh House has been open since the 1980s. Marsh House offers highly structured outpatient substance abuse treatment along with supportive housing for adult men, with a minimum stay of 90 days. Although technically outpatient care, the program essentially functions as a residential rehab.
Accommodations and Food
The James K Marsh House is located just across the river from Kentucky in Portsmouth, Ohio. Clients get use of a living room space and full kitchen. Marsh House can take up to 12 men at a time who share comfortable bedrooms at a maximum of four people to a room. All meals are included in the cost of stay and prepared for the clients. Clients who stay at the house get transportation to the Counseling Center to the treatment building.
Treatment and Staff
While in Marsh House clients have access to group eight hours a day from 8 am to 4 pm. In the evenings they may go to off-site AA/NA meetings with the staff. They also take part in one individual session per week. The Counseling Center utilizes CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). As part of treatment clients also take part in recreational activities and a physical wellness program.
As far as communication with the outside world goes, while at the Marsh House, clients are permitted to use the house phone for five minutes on their first day. On their eighth day they may either make a 10-minute call on the house phone or use their personal cell phone for one hour, which remains locked up during all other times. Clients are not allowed incoming calls but family may leave messages for them. Clients may receive mail. An in-house visit is permitted on the Sunday of the third weekend of a client’s stay. Maximum number of visitors is four at a time. After the 40th day of stay clients may earn a 32-hour weekend pass.
Once clients have completed the prescribed three months of treatment they may step down into the Second Chance program which maintains housing but offers fewer restrictions and less therapy. Marsh House employs group counselors—half of whom work in the supportive housing program and half in outpatient—as well as case managers and a medical doctor on staff.
Extras
Marsh House clients may also take part in physical fitness programs provided out of the Shawnee State University Athletic Center or the Pike County YMCA.
In Summary
After three decades of operation, the James K Marsh House is an interesting option for treatment. It accepts most insurance, including Medicaid and offers average prices even in cases of self-pay. More importantly, it allows potential clients the option of staying at the house if they need the level of care or choosing the more economical option of taking part in the program on an outpatient basis if that better suits their needs.
