Jamaica New York The Basics

The Child Center of New York began its work in 1953 as a children’s counseling center. Today it also offers outpatient substance abuse treatment for adolescents and women, from its Jamaica Family Center. The Jamaica Family Center treats children of all ages from the very young who have a parent struggling with substance abuse to adolescents and adults who need treatment. The facility offers individual and group therapy, as well as family sessions and a DUI program. Services are available in English and Spanish.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at the Jamaica Family Center is simple and straightforward. Each client’s program is completely individualized and may include whatever appropriate ratio of individual and group sessions is mutually decided between client and counselors. Clients attend the program at least twice each week and may either take part in 45-minute long individual sessions, or group that lasts one hour at a time. Length of treatment is typically designated at six months.

The Jamaica Family Center does not directly endorse the 12-step modality but does encourage clients to attend local meetings if it seems beneficial. The program uses evidence-based techniques including CBT and DBT. The program runs Mondays through Thursdays from 8 am to 8 pm and Fridays from 8 am and 5 pm. The JFC has a psychologist on staff as well as a number of LADCs and LCSWs.

Extras

Random toxicology testing, anger management seminars, trauma processing groups and domestic violence services are available.

For those who need the kind of treatment offered at Jamaica Family Center but are not English or Spanish speakers the Child Center of New York also provides an Asian outreach program out of two locations in Elmhurst and Flushing. The program offers multilingual and multicultural counseling for domestic violence, substance abuse and other mental health issues for Chinese, Filipino, Korean, South Asian and Persian families. Elmhurst offers services from 9 am to 5 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 am and 3 pm. Flushing offers services Monday through Thursday between 9 am and 9 pm as well as Fridays between 9 am and 7 pm and Saturdays between 9 am and 3 pm. Services are offered in Bengali, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Gujarati, Hindi, Korean, Marathi, Tagalog, Taiwanese and Urdu.

In Summary

The Jamaica Family Center has its mother organization’s more than 60 years of experience to back up the quality of its services. The Jamaica Family Center accepts most insurance but it also offers all services on a sliding scale fee structure, with the added proviso that it will not turn anyone away. So for those women who may be considering using JFC services for themselves and their children possible cost does not need to be a factor in their decision-making process.
