jacobsThe Basics

Jacobs Safehouse provides sober living for men with eight locations in Naples, Florida.  Founded by Larry Ferguson—a recovering alcoholic himself—Jacobs Safehouse has been serving Naples and the Collier County community for over 13 years.

Accommodations and Amenities

Jacobs Safehouse’s homes are all located in quiet residential neighborhoods and have two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room and kitchen. All rooms are double-occupancy with twin beds and a shared dresser and closet.

While the houses are small, they are comfortably furnished and include Internet, cable TV and laundry facilities. Residents are responsible for purchasing their own food and are also required to contribute money toward a house fund for purchasing paper towels, laundry soap, trash bags and other household items.

Rules and Regulations

Clients must be sober upon entry and consent to weekly drug and alcohol testing. New residents are on the “buddy system” for the first week and can only leave the house with another client. They must also attend 90 AA/NA meetings in 90 days (regardless of their length of sobriety time). Beyond that time, Jacobs requires all clients to continue attending  meetings regularly—and house slips must be signed.

Mandatory house meetings are held on a weekly basis. Clients are also required to work or go to school by week four, and the job-search process is monitored by the house manager. Those who are not employable are required to participate in charity work.

Curfew is 11 pm Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. TV viewing is permitted from 8 am to 11 pm but clients must be considerate of the volume so their fellow residents are not disturbed. Visiting is permitted up until 10 pm, with guests allowed in the common areas only.

All residents are responsible for house cleaning and are assigned weekly chores. Smoking is prohibited in all houses, but permitted outside in designated areas. Violence, drug use, stealing, verbal abuse and racial or religious slurs are grounds for immediate dismissal and rent will be forfeited.

In Summary

Jacobs Safehouse is a great choice for sober men who are willing to embrace the 12-step philosophy and work hard to become functioning members of society. The philosophy at Jacobs is that the physical, emotional and spiritual health of the individual must be addressed for recovery to take place. For those in search of luxury, amenities and autonomy, it is probably not a good fit. However, individuals from all walks of life will find a supportive and structured environment to help them transition back into  daily life.
