The Basics
A component of the Eastern Oklahoma Veteran’s Affairs Health Care System, The Jack C. Montgomery VA is located in Muskogee, a small city 50 miles southeast of Tulsa. JCM has been providing outpatient substance abuse treatment to U.S. Veterans since 2007 and facilitates transfers to inpatient VA treatment centers in Arkansas, Texas and Wyoming for those requiring residential care. JCM also offers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for those battling opiate addiction. The Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System serves more than 45,000 Veterans each year.
Treatment and Staff
After a full bio-psycho-social assessment, clients are enrolled in either the standard track or in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Standard outpatient clients attend group therapy once or twice each week and individual therapy as-needed. IOP clients attend group therapy Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays of each week and have weekly individual therapy. Most clients complete their treatment plan in eight weeks.
Therapy groups have 12 or fewer participants and use CBT, Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT) and Acceptance-Commitment Therapy. While clients are not required to attend 12-step meetings during treatment, some therapists incorporate the 12-step model.
The treatment team at JCM includes psychologists and Master’s-level therapists including MSWs and LPCs. All therapists also have addiction counseling credentials such as CADCs. If clients with co-occurring disorders need therapy and medication management for mental health diagnoses, they have access to JCM’s robust behavioral health team of psychiatrists and therapists.
Clients who wish to receive MAT for opiate addiction are prescribed Suboxone. They must, however, work with a clinician to create a treatment plan that includes group therapy in addition to receiving their doses.
Extras
Several times a year, JCM offers a family group to educate loved ones about substance abuse and treatment. Family and loved ones can also attend individual therapy sessions if the client’s therapist considers it beneficial. JCM also has a gambling prevention specialist on staff for help with problem gambling habits and addictions.
