J Cole Recovery Homes Review

Located in the San Francisco Bay Area community of Antioch, California, J Cole Recovery Homes is a men’s 12-step social residential program for substance abuse. Beginning as a sober living in the 1990s, the vision for this facility was to create a safe environment for men to work on addiction issues and begin their recovery. The program was converted into a residential facility in 2002, allowing men to practice real-life skills and receive therapy in a family-like environment. With meetings available every day of the week, the clients have the chance to fully engage in the 12-step world.

Accommodations and Food

The J Cole Recovery Homes’ 15-client program houses the men in an adobe-style, family home. This 3,400-square-foot space has all of things that a traditional household would have and is close to the California Delta waterfront. Nicely-sized bedrooms are shared between two to four clients, featuring twin beds or bunk beds, dressers and carpeting. The house also includes a large kitchen, a living room with a TV and a therapy room.

As part of their education in necessary life skills, the men are required to prepare their own meals. Each week, the kitchen is stocked by the staff and the men are expected to plan the menu and arrange meal preparation as a group. Under the guidance of the house manager, the clients prepare breakfast options such as bacon, eggs, fruit and biscuits while dinner may include fresh vegetables, spaghetti, salad, meatloaf, bread and rice. Clients are allowed to visit the corner store for snacks and cigarettes.

Treatment and Staff

J Cole Recovery Homes offers long-term treatment for men ages 18 and older, with typical length of stay falling between 90 and 180 days. The client goes through an initial orientation period of seven days, acclimating to their new environment and creating an individualized treatment plan with their primary counselor. From here, clients are immersed in daily group therapy, individual therapy at least once a week, daily 12-step work, and life skills classes. Group topics include relapse prevention, Big Book studies, anger management, trauma, meditation, family dynamics and the addiction-as-a-disease model. The life skills classes include literacy, parenting, domestic violence, HIV awareness, money management and employment preparation.

Clients receive weekly progress reports. By working closely with their primary counselor, they are able to constantly refine their treatment experience in an individualized manner. The men are required to attend 12-step meetings at least five times a week. Weekend meetings are offered, but they are optional. Clients are required to get a sponsor while in treatment, and begin working the steps.

The staff includes certified addiction counselors, house managers and social workers.

Extras

The house has a manicured front lawn and ample backyard space for barbecues and visiting with family members. There is a workout room with a handful of weight machines. When the weather permits, walks outside can be taken. During the weekends, the men have a chance to participate in recreational activities such as hiking.

In Summary

J Cole Recovery Homes provides an exemplary, affordable residential program that focuses on the needs of men. Strongly rooted in the 12 steps, this facility walks the men through the world of AA/NA, using its principles to guide the clients through recovery. With hands-on staff members, weekly progress reports, a small group size and a variety of life skills classes, lasting sobriety and serenity can be found here.
