Isabella House is a long-term residential facility specifically for pregnant or post-partum women and their children located in Spokane, Washington. The facility originally opened in 1984 and is managed by the New Horizon Care Centers treatment network. The Isabella House Women and Children’s Program is the only program of its kind in the Inland Northwest. It provides intensive behavior modification therapy and education to its clients for low to no cost.

Accommodations and Food

The Isabella House is a beautiful, Victorian home that can accommodate up to 24 adult women and 21 of their children under the age of six. Residents share bedrooms with each other and their children, taking turns maintaining the home with daily chores including cooking and cleaning. There is a shared living room with a TV that can seat up to 12 as well as a kitchen and dining room, meeting rooms and a playroom for the kids. All the food for clients is provided from local food banks in Spokane and meal plans are designed by the staff that are balanced and healthy. There are also special Sunday morning brunches prepared by the staff.

Treatment and Staff

Isabella House provides six months of treatment and are designed to empower clients while educating them about the disease of addiction. There are daily group sessions as well as individual therapy once or twice a week. Cell phones and Internet use are not allowed while residents are in treatment. Smoking is also prohibited.

Clients are also expected to hold each other accountable to house rules and regulations and offer peer support during meetings. Other therapy options include psychoeducation classes, relapse prevention meetings, anger management sessions and domestic violence treatment. While the adults are participating in groups and classes the children stay with an on-site childcare provider.

For those with co-occurring disorders there is a LPN on-site or administer medication daily. The house has 24-hour staff including therapeutic childcare specialists, LPCs, LCSWs, case managers and on-site house managers.

Aside from treatment, Isabella House also organizes field trips, movie nights and recreational outings for residents. Yoga, creative writing, acupuncture and infant massages are also offered. During their time in treatment, women are also provided the opportunity to get their GED or take job skills training sessions.

The staff of New Horizons and Isabella House also works closely with clients who have lost custody of their children as a result of substance abuse. The facility also works with CPS when necessary to ensure that mothers can still stay with their children while in treatment.
