iRecover Serenity PalmsiRecover Review

Located in Palm Springs, California, iRecover offers inpatient substance abuse treatment for men and women over 18. The private, desert environment allows for clients to immerse themselves in recovery. The iRecover residential treatment network was founded by Jim Gray, a man with over 20 years of sobriety. Gray was inspired to get into the treatment industry after his son was injured by a drunk driver in 2005. With two locations in Canada, the iRecover network recently acquired the Palm Springs facility. The unique technology-based approach offers each client their own iPad, which they can take home for FaceTime aftercare counseling sessions and outpatient treatment.

Accommodations and Food

The serene, resort-like setting of iRecover accommodates clients in private, apartment-style rooms. The well-appointed facility provides swimming pool and exercise equipment, as well as communal areas in which to relax.

Meals are provided, and are prepared by staff. Food is generally very nutritious and home-style, catering to the small group of clients. Outside food and beverages, as well as electronic equipment are not allowed.

Treatment and Staff

Those who arrive requiring medical detox from alcohol, benzodiazepines or opiates are provided Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and doctor supervision. They are administered Suboxone and Vivitrol as needed. All clients receive individualized treatment plans, and participate in a highly structured environment. Dual diagnosis support is offered for clients with co-occurring disorders. Program length is 60 days, and clients engage in drug and alcohol education in a classroom setting.

Treatment and iRecover is evidence-based and technology-focused. Clients use their iPads for 12-step related writing, journaling, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT exercises. Education about addiction is offered through various modules, which are loaded onto the device. Clients also attend in-person group and individual therapy sessions and 12-step meetings where they can discuss and build upon their individual exercises.

Outpatient treatment is suggested as as step down for clients who complete the residential program, and for those that do not require the intensity of inpatient treatment, but still are in need of support. The program lasts four weeks, and offers sessions at several times of the day. This is to accommodate those clients that are required to work or attend other commitments. Treatment consists of group and individual CBT, with special focus on relapse prevention. Clients meet several times a week, and also utilize the same iPad-based protocol as the residential clients. In addition, they are provided with ongoing support from the counselors via FaceTime check ins after they complete treatment.

LCDCs facilitate all sessions in conjunction with Master’s-level therapists and a doctor is available to supervise the medications.

Extras

Additional therapies available include nutritional and physical education and support, with clients required to participate in daily exercise. Guided hikes, yoga and swimming are offered to add variety. Meditation is also encouraged and supported by on-site meditation groups.

Family involvement is strongly encouraged. Loved ones are suggested to attend Al Anon or Nar-Anon meetings, as well as weekend visitations. Attendance at weekend church services is also supported, with the faith of clients and their families respected.

In Summary

iRecover provides evidence-based treatment modalities in addition to a unique, tech-based approach. The use of the iPad for education, assignments and journaling is unusual, and will no doubt appeal to those who are already comfortable with this technology.  The classroom setting for 12-step work may be beneficial to many, and the traditional CBT model is proven to be often effective. The cost does not include detox, but is typically covered by insurance.
