Established in 1971 by former probation officer Paul Vitagliano, Insight House Chemical Dependency is a not-for-profit residential and outpatient drug and alcohol program in Utica, New York that treats adult and adolescent addicts as well as those with co-occurring disorders. It is state-funded, charges on a sliding scale and accepts most insurance, but no one is turned away if they cannot afford treatment. The goal of Insight House is to treat not only addiction but also the dysfunctional daily patterns of addicts and alcoholics. Though Vitagliano died in 1998, his widow, Donna, now runs Insight House and his son, Paul Jr., is its training director.
Accommodations and Food
Insight House is a hospital-like rehabilitation facility with 44 beds. Up to four people can be housed in one room, with one bed in every corner, and each client has his or her own dresser. There are common areas for residents to relax and interact with each other, as well as a cafeteria.
Food at Insight House is simple but healthy, and any dietary restrictions for medical reasons or allergies can be accommodated. Staff prepares and serves meals, which are balanced with protein, starch, vegetables and fruit.
Treatment and Staff
Clients undergo a comprehensive assessment to determine the course of treatment before being admitted. Typically, the inpatient residential program lasts between seven and nine months, but it depends on each person’s progress in recovery. No detox is offered on-site, although those who do need detox are referred to a nearby clinic. Impact House also offers day rehabilitation and outpatient services.
All programs offer psychiatric assessment and medication treatment when necessary, as well as group and individual therapy. Groups focus on stress reduction, dual diagnosis and relapse prevention. There are also structured health and wellness education groups.
In the day rehabilitation program, clients attend group sessions four hours a day, five days a week; as treatment continues, the regularity of sessions decreases.
The professional staff at Insight House is comprised of social workers and CADCs. A psychiatrist is available for those needing medication management and assistance. There are roughly 50 staff members including a small night crew to fill out round-the-clock supervision.
In addition to regular groups, Insight House offers a women-specific track with both individual and group counseling that focuses on self-esteem, relationship and health issues (including smoking cessation and HIV care), trauma and parenting classes. Co-ed courses in high school equivalency exam preparation are also offered, in addition to family groups.
Insight House engages the community with many prevention campaigns and events, including school programs, to educate teens and adolescents about the risk of alcohol abuse. Insight also offers classes to parents to help them identify signs of alcohol or drug addiction in their children and how they might address those issues constructively.
For those in financial need looking for quality intensive rehabilitation from alcohol and drug use in Central New York, Insight House is a great option. It’s a welcoming facility that treats clients with dignity, despite being a non-profit and state-funded rehab. The organization’s dedication to prevent the spread of drug and alcohol addiction throughout the community shows its deep commitment to curb drug and alcohol abuse. With classes in parenting, health and education and even high school equivalency exam preparation, Insight House offers its clients important resources to help turn their lives around.
