The Basics
Located in Fairfax, Virginia, Inova Kellar Center has been offering substance abuse and mental health services for over 20 years. Founded in 1991, the organization represents a partnership between the Inova Healthcare Network and Art and Betty Kellar, who set out to serve the community in northern Virginia with affordable behavioral health services. While this facility provides mental health services for all ages, the substance abuse program is for adolescents only. It offers outpatient individualized treatment based on the 12 steps for those ages 13 to 17.
Treatment and Staff
Inova Kellar Center offers several levels of outpatient treatment for adolescents struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. These include a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient (IOP), individual therapy and family therapy. Based on an assessment, therapists work with each client and their parents to choose a level of care that suits their needs. The 12 steps are a crucial component of all programs because this rehab aims to teach life-long recovery skills. While a medically monitored detox is not available, referrals to an outside facility can be made.
The PHP provides support five days a week, for three hours at a time. The program includes psychiatric, psychosocial and substance abuse evaluations. CBT-based therapy occurs on a group level every day and individually once a week. Group topics include introduction to the 12 steps, the addiction-as-a-disease model, relapse prevention, self-esteem, processing, coping skills, trauma and family dynamics. Family therapy is also offered on a weekly basis to help family members and clients work through the recovery process smoothly.
The next level of care is IOP, offering support three times a week, for three hours at a time. This option follows a similar structure to the PHP, using a mix of therapy and education to help clients. The length of treatment in either program depends on the individual.
In addition to their structured programs, Inova Kellar Center also offers individual sessions for adolescent substance abusers. These may be recommended for clients based on their initial assessment and can also be a great source of maintenance for those who have graduated from IOP.
The highly-trained staff includes six adolescent psychiatrists, four licensed clinical psychologists and four LCSWs who serve as therapists and program managers.
Extras
Because the clients at Inova Kellar Center are school-aged and spend much of their time in treatment, academic support is offered. Tutors are available Monday through Friday by appointment. Random drug screens are also included in each of the programs.

Inova Kellar Center uses the 12 steps and traditional therapeutic practices to help adolescents gain a sense of stability. While rehabilitation can seem like a daunting task for a young person, this facility creates a safe and supportive environment. Through the understanding staff and small peer groups, clients are able to share in a honest way and learn new coping skills.
