Independence House Fillmore Review
Located in Denver, Colorado, Independence House Fillmore is dual diagnosis certified residential treatment program for men transitioning out of correctional facilities. In addition to therapy for addiction and mental illness, the program is designed to teach residents all the necessary skills they need to reintegrate into society. Its services are set aside specifically for those working with local correctional programs.
Accommodations and Food
The facility has a total of 40 beds available for men who are housed in dorm-style rooms. Bedrooms are shared with several other clients and are equipped with twin beds, dressers and shared closet space. Bathroom are also shared. The facility also have common living areas with TV and a fully-equipped kitchen. Throughout their stay, residents are required to buy their own food and prepare their own meals.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all clients must go through an initial intake and assessment including an interview to help staff members develop their individualized treatment plans. While the specifics of each plan may vary, treatment generally consists of both individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based practices like CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Groups cover a range of topics designed to teach life skills and deconstruct maladaptive thought processes. This includes teaching clients healthy attitudes towards authority, job skills and social skills. In addition to counseling, residents also meet with staff psychiatrists for co-occurring disorders support and medication management as necessary. Depending on the stipulations of each client’s court-order, 12-step participation may also be required.
The staff at Independence House Fillmore consists of psychiatrists, LCSWs, CACs, case managers, nurse practitioners and addition Master’s and PhD-level staff.
Extras
In addition to the above, programs also includes a therapeutic community element where 10 active clients who are further in the program form a “Structure Team” that provides leadership to other clients. This model includes group sessions where issues of self-esteem, self-discipline and other healthy thought processes are discussed. Those in need of aftercare services can also attend stepped-down outpatient treatment through Independence House as well.

Treatment is evidence-based and includes life skills classes and dual diagnosis support to stop recidivism and help clients transition out of a life of crime.
