Imperial County Behavioral Health Services (ICBHS), located in El Centro, California, offers outpatient substance abuse treatment services to adults ages 18 and over and adolescents ages 12 to 21. El Centro is just 10 miles north of the US—Mexico border. Because of easy access to mind-altering substances in Mexico, counselors find they must work harder to keep clients engaged in treatment. Imperial County Behavioral Health Services is the only mental health and substance abuse treatment facility located in the county.
Treatment and Staff
Once incoming clients have completed intake and their initial assessment, ICBHS decides what program would be the best fit. They can receive outpatient services for as long as needed, although the usual length of service ranges from three to six months. Treatment methods include evidence-based practices such as CBT and DBT as well as Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the Seeking Safety curriculum. Both adult and adolescent clients have options for specialized group therapy and individual therapy.
Adolescent groups meet 10 group sessions per month. This includes two times monthly, for 90 minutes at the office and two times per week at the student’s school. Adolescents also receive 10 individual sessions with their counselor monthly. Adult clients typically meet weekly for individual sessions and twice monthly for group work, focusing on making healthy choices, coping with the urge to use and preventing relapse, and learning how to balance their lives and emotions. Dual diagnosis support is offered for both adults and teens in an individual setting.
A medical doctor is a part-time member of the ICBHS staff. He helps counselors in creating treatment plans for each client and oversees medication management, if necessary. Every staff member is a CADC. ICBHS has four specially-trained counselors available to work with adolescent clients. Group sizes are deliberately maintained at two to 12 clients per counselor for both adolescent and adult groups. With parental consent, treatment is free for minors. Adult clients can use Medi-Cal if they qualify. If not, services re available on a sliding fee scale.
A family program is offered that includes psychoeducation and therapy intended to help family members address the harm done by their loved one’s substance abuse and its effect on all family members. They also learn to understand substance abuse, so they can help their family member once they have been discharged from services.
If clients opt to participate, they can receive aftercare, which consists of case management services to ensure they are receiving any support they need to remain substance-free.
For residents of Imperial County, California, ICBHS provides much-needed affordable, evidence-based counseling services. Although those who need a more rigorous program may want to seek treatment at an inpatient facility, this is an excellent resource for the community.
