Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery Review
The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery (IIAR) began in 1979 when the board of trustees of Peoria’s Proctor Hospital trained staff at Minnesota’s Hazelden Clinic to treat its clients with substance use disorders. The Institute offers both residential and outpatient treatment. Its 28-day inpatient programs are located at the Peoria, Normal and Harvey, Illinois locations. The facilities are equipped with on-site detox units and the Peoria location also offers a track for adolescents. In addition to substance abuse, IIAR treats process addictions such as gambling, sex, shopping and video game-playing.
Accommodations and Food
Residents are housed in modern treatment facilities where they have roommates and shared bathrooms. The facilities have a common area for recreation, such as games and TV. Cell phones and computers are not permitted, but residents can use the unit phones to call home. All facilities are nicotine and caffeine-free.
All meals and snacks are prepared by a cafeteria and transported to the resident’s unit. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
Upon admission, residents are given a treatment schedule that includes group and individual therapy each day. Residents attend six to seven groups daily and are encouraged to attend on-site 12-step meetings as well. Therapy implements CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the 12-step framework.
The comprehensive treatment team includes physicians, nurses, case managers, LCSWs and addiction counselors with the CADC credential. The treatment team is experienced treating co-occurring disorders, and IIAR’s psychiatrists can administer and monitor medication for mental health diagnoses.
Clients work with case managers to plan their recovery steps following residential treatment. Many clients step down into IIAR’s outpatient programs, which are available in Springfield, Peoria and Harvey.
Extras
Clients can take advantage of weekly yoga classes. Each facility offers a family program on Saturday mornings and visiting hours on Sundays.
IIAR also publishes a quarterly magazine, Paradigm, that addresses addiction issues, and hosts quarterly educational lunches on recovery topics for treatment professionals.
In Summary
The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery offers some of the state’s most established substance abuse programs. Its residential locations are well-equipped to treat clients with co-occurring disorders. By offering continuing care in its coordinated outpatient programs, its residential treatment may be a good choice for those who know they would benefit from the continuity of a long-term treatment plan.
