The Basics
Pasadena, California’s Huntington Hospital has been providing quality care to the community for over 125 years. The outpatient psychiatric division includes both a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and step-down Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) that are individualized, and facilitated by a multidisciplinary team of addiction specialists and medical professionals. Programming includes dual diagnosis support, psychoeducation, evidence-based treatment practices and 12-step integration.
Treatment and Staff
Though the typical client in the outpatient program is stepping down from the inpatient treatment offered at the facility, there are also those who begin treatment without having been in a residential program. The strength based programming includes several group sessions per day in addition to on-site AA meetings. Clients usually also have written and workbook assignments as well.
The PHP runs Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm and includes lunch. The IOP is a three days a week with around nine to 10 hours of treatment per week. Group therapy focuses on relapse prevention techniques, coping skills, identifying triggers and aftercare goals. There are also specialty groups that run in the evenings in addition to the other treatment programs. One is a six-week group for adults that offers guidance for those who have lost a loved one and are dealing with grief. The other is a mental health support group that ongoing for those with bipolar disorder and severe depression. Both groups are free of charge, with the mental health one being peer lead.
There are a variety of therapeutic approaches utilized in treatment. CBT and DBT are common evidence-based methods, along with EMDR and Motivational Interviewing (MI). In addition, holistic modalities, like art and music therapy, and animal assisted therapy are commonly offered throughout programming.
Outpatient treatment programs are overseen by CADCs, addiction specialists, psychiatrists, medical doctors and nurses.

Family members and spouses of clients have therapy options available on an individual basis.
