Founded in 1977, Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program is a non-profit organization based out of Flemington, New Jersey providing basic outpatient treatment and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse. The facility is licensed by the state and receives funding from a variety of governmental and private sources so they can provide affordable care for a wide range of clients including adults and adolescents.

Treatment and Staff

With an overall focus on early intervention, all programs employ evidence-based modalities and require abstinence from alcohol and drugs during treatment.

The adolescent track lasts for 15 weeks and consists of four weekly groups for clients between the ages of 13 and 18. Clients participate in one Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) group on Wednesdays from 6 to 7 pm and a multi-family group from 7:15 to 8 pm. There are eight individual sessions spread throughout the program and clients are typically expected to attend one or more AA/NA meetings a month. Parents stay involved by attending 10 parent group sessions during their child’s enrollment in addition to the multi-family groups. Group topics include education about the disease of addiction, sex education, college and life skills, spirituality, communication skills and relapse triggers.

The basic adult outpatient track consists of individual, group and family therapy as well and can also include job referrals or other ancillary services as necessary. There are a range of groups topics available that clients can choose from including an early recovery/early intervention with MET, relapse prevention and gender-specific groups. There is also a 16-week program for clients with a DUI/DWI and a children of substance abusers group.

Those enrolled in the IOP must commit to the highest level of care, consisting of many of the same treatment methods as the other programs but with with additional hours. Clients generally attend treatment for nine hours a week, with both evening and day groups available. Evening sessions are held on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 6 to 9 pm while day groups are scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm.

Staff consists of Master’s-level LCADCs, LCSWs and LPCs.

Extras

Chemical dependency evaluations are provided on a stand-alone basis, as are a variety of prevention and education services. An Intoxicated Drivers’ Resource Center offers a 12-hour program for those who have been charged with a DUI and employee addiction assistance is also available.

In Summary

The Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program is a traditional, straight-forward outpatient treatment facility that uses evidence-based methods to care for adolescent and adults. The organization is also a well-established non-profit, so clients are assured comprehensive care at an affordable rate. While light on medical supervision, Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program is worth consideration from those in the area.
