Eureka CaliforniaHumboldt Recovery Center Review

The Humboldt Recovery Center, which was founded in 1972, is a residential substance abuse treatment facility and is one of the largest and oldest programs of its kind in Northern California. The evidence-based, structured treatment is for adult men and women and utilizes CBT methods with a focus on relapse prevention and coping skills.

Accommodations and Food

Multiple residences serve as both a home and treatment facility for the clients of Humboldt Recovery Center. These beautiful, Victorian homes each accommodate up to 12 clients, with each sharing bedrooms between two or three people. In every house there are the essentials; living room with TV, dining room and shared kitchen. Clients take turns preparing the weeks menus for each other and then cleaning up after. All the food is provided for the client that is healthy and filling. There are also options for clients with allergies as well.

Cell phones, laptops and bikes are permitted while in the program, and after the first two weeks, clients can begin to have visitors and eventually get day passes. If a client happens to be in the program during the holidays, the facility invites their family members over to spend the day with them.

Treatment and Staff

The individual who will be receiving the treatment is the only one who can get the ball rolling to get into Humboldt Recovery Center. After the in-person assessment, clients are placed on a short waiting list and can then begin the program, which can last between three and six months. The program is broken down into phases, with phase one being the most intensive so that the client can acclimate to the treatment and get comfortable in their new surroundings. There are two group sessions per day and one individual session per week. There are also homework assignments that the clients are expected to do, and journaling.

The treatment focuses on CBT, anger management, and coping skills. There is medication management available for clients who enter into treatment with established medications that is monitored by a staff doctor. There are additional training and services offered, with the intent to prepare and empower the clients as much as possible during their time in treatment. Employment services, like job training, resume building and interviewing skills, education, like helping clients obtain their GED or assisting in applying for funding to continue their education.

The facility director, Joel T. McDonough, brings over 35 years of experience in the field of addition and recovery services, and oversees the senior CSAC, and multiple support staff that are available 24 hours a day to assist with anything the clients may need.

Extras

On the premises there is work out equipment, like weights and machines for cardio, and frequent, weekly recreational outings, like hiking, kayaking and even the occasional camping trip. There is also a yoga instructor that comes to teach in home classes every week.

Though children and family members are not permitted to stay at the facility for overnight visits, visiting frequently and dining with the clients is allowed. The facility also offers aftercare assistance in finding sober living or counseling services.

In Summary

Surrounded by the beautiful landscape that Humboldt County has to offer, this program provides a sense of safety after coming out of chaos. The message that’s given is accountability leads to freedom, which is a beautiful sentiment will serve graduates of this program well in recovery.
