Established in 1938, Human Development Center is a private non-profit organization providing mental and behavioral health services to communities in Minnesota and Wisconsin. After merging with HRC Mental Health Center in 2008, Human Development Center expanded its programs to five different locations in Minnesota’s Carlton, Cook, Lake, St. Louis and Douglas counties, with the latter acting as it’s primary facility for chemical dependency outpatient treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment is individualized and combines group and individual counseling using evidence based methods including psychotherapy, CBT and DBT for both addiction and dual diagnosis support. A separate track is available for for adolescents, offering all the above treatment methods as well as educational classes about the dangers of substance abuse. The adult program is co-ed but gender-specific groups are available, including one which focuses on the specific issues pregnant women face in recovery. Attendance of outside AA/NA meetings is recommended.

Though the staff varies by location, it generally consists of LCSWs, Master’s-level counselors, LADCs, LPCs and LMFTs.

Extras

Clients with severe mental disabilities may receive treatment and learn how to live independently with case management services for both adults and children. Early intervention and prevention programs are available for kids between the ages of eight and 12, typically as a result of teacher recommendation. Medication management, housing assistance, psycho-social services and treatment for eating disorders are also offered at some of the locations, as well as psychological testing and assessments.

In Summary

Overall, Human Development Center is a solid, community-oriented organization that uses evidence-based practices for the treatment of adults and adolescents with addiction, mental health and behavioral issues. With several locations serving a variety of specific mental and behavioral health needs, HDC is a good choice for local, affordable and comprehensive outpatient care.
