HPA/LiveWell Review

HPA/LiveWell is an eating disorder and mental health clinic with two New York State locations in Albany and Poughkeepsie. Both facilities offer outpatient care that provides group and individual therapy and nutritional counseling. Treatment is rooted in evidence-based practices and helps clients to address body image issues and learn how to prevent relapses. HPA/LiveWell facilitates both an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and step-down standard outpatient programming.

Treatment and Staff

Upon admission every client undergoes an assessment with an intake therapist, and then is placed into a treatment track. Depending on whether they are placed in the IOP or OP treatment, clients can expect to be participating in their programming anywhere between once a week for a couple of hours, to several days per week for several hours—though the standard is a four day a week treatment plan for up to four hours a day. Both locations offer flexible treatment hours with programming available late into the evening on most nights and some day weekend times as well.

Every client has a customized program, so for that reason there isn’t a set amount of time they are expected to remain in treatment. As each client moves through their program they have frequent check ins with staff, and eventually step down to a less intensive schedule of treatment. There are IOPs for eating disorders and clients with a dual diagnosis.

Treatment approaches include DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) CBT, interpersonal therapy and exposure therapy. Clients learn how to empower themselves when it comes to their relationship to food, change how they regard food and how they see themselves.

There are several group sessions per week. These include how to manage emotions, grief and loss, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) and groups that address personal and family relationships. Group therapy at HPA/LiveWell are both open and closed, with the closed groups being limited in the amount of weeks and space, and the open are ongoing and is open to new clients regularly. There are also therapeutic recreational activities like yoga regularly.

Staff is comprised of a therapists, dietitians and nurse practitioners. Many of them are Master’s-level or higher counselors with extensive backgrounds in both mental health and eating disorders. Accreditations include LCSW, LMHC, and psychologist. Additionally, HPA/LiveWell offers culturally sensitive counseling options and is proud to be able to provide therapists from a variety of backgrounds in order to accommodate this need.
