The Howard Center is a CARF Accredited facility that was originally founded in 1865 in Burlington, Vermont. Howard Center has been providing men, women and children comprehensive behavioral and medical care, including crisis intervention, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and outpatient services. With over 60 satelite locations and over 1,500 staff members. The Howard Center offers many different programs for crisis and substance abuse and is one of the largest agencies of its kind.

Treatment and Staff

The Howard Center serves clients with a varying degrees of addiction, and in addition to counseling services also operates two Chittenden Clinics, which are facilities that provide MAT for opioid dependency. These programs include the use of Suboxone and Methadone and work to get the clients stabilized enough to be able to receive a take home dose of the medication. This process requires daily visits to the clinic and several, random drug tests every week.

There are outpatient services for children and their families, which offer group and individual therapy through evidence based methods, like CBT, EMDR and play therapy. There is also the Pine Street Counseling Services for adults only. This location utilizes strength based therapy methods and psychiatric services for client with co-occurring disorders. Medication management is available through this program, as well as individual and group therapy. The programs also recommend client attend at least three 12-step meetings per week during their time in treatment. Finally a program known as Safe Recovery, which mainly focuses on those in the earlier stages of cocaine and heroin dependence, and includes a needle exchange program, relapse prevention, HIV education, support and medical referral and aftercare planning services.

The very large staff of the Howard Center comes with vast experience working in behavioral health and addiction. Accreditations include Master’s-level LCSWs, psychologists, LADCs, and medical staff, including physicians and LPNs.

Extras

The Howard Center not only serves those with addiction, but also offers specialty programs to clients with autism and developmental disabilities through education, providing employment skill training and outreach programs throughout the community. There are also programs for clients who have received a DUI.
