Houston IOP Review

As its name may suggest, Houston IOP is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) located in Houston, Texas. It specializes in treating behavioral health issues and co-occurring disorders. Though support is available for clients struggling with addiction, the organization advises that those whose primary issue is with substance abuse perhaps seek additional help as well. For those with PTSD, anxiety, depression or other mental health issues, plenty of support is available.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff determine their needs. Because the treatment offered is outpatient only, detox services for addiction are not provided on-site. While programs may differ somewhat, each lasts a minimum of 10 weeks with groups on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, for approximately three hours per session. Treatment can be extended three more weeks as necessary.

Treatment includes individual and group therapy with evidence-based practices including DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Psychoeducational groups are also a fixture of treatment. Other sessions focus on mindfulness, emotional regulation, goal-setting and stress management. One weekly spirituality group is also included. As mentioned, dual diagnosis support is available as well, including medication management. While 12-step participation is not required (though it may be as a punitive measure), referrals can be made as necessary.

The staff at Houston IOP consists of psychologists, LPCs, LMFTs, LCDCs, MDs, a chaplain, an occupational therapist, psychiatric nurses and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Unlike some outpatient plans, Houston IOP has relatively strict rules and codes of conduct for attendees. All participants must be 18 years or older and have 30 days sober. Those showing bad behavior in groups may be assigned homework or given punitive actions. No more than four absences are allowed as well; a full list of rules is available on the organization’s website. Those who complete primary care can also work with staff members to develop stepped down aftercare plans.

In Summary

Houston IOP is a structured program with evidence-based practices and a diversely qualified staff. Both individual and group therapies are available to treat any number of mental illnesses. While those struggling with more severe addictions may need to seek additional support, Houston IOP remains a strong resource for clients whose primary diagnosis is a mental health issue.
