Based in Corona, California, Signature Healthcare Services is one of the largest networks of private psychiatric hospitals in the country. It delivers mental health and substance abuse treatment services for children, adolescents and adults in ten hospitals. These are located in California, Arizona, Nevada, Illinois and in multiple locations throughout Texas. Each hospital delivers a continuum of care, accepting clients on a voluntary basis.

Part of the Signature network, Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital provides treatment for adults and adolescents. In addition to acute psychiatric care, it offers Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and a Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) for the treatment of substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

The programs at Houston Behavioral Healthcare are primarily for psychiatric clients who have a substance abuse component to their diagnosis. The PHP and IOP are designed to help clients avoid hospitalization, while still offering a strong foundation for recovery and reintegration to the community. Both programs offer dual diagnosis support, with medication management and regular sessions with the doctor and psychiatrist. Treatment plans are highly individualized, and are designed to be flexible, while still challenging for the client. A specialized IOP for adolescents aged 13 to 17 is also available, and follows the same structure as the adult program.

The PHP meets weekdays from 9 am to 2 pm, and clients choose attend each day for at least two weeks, after which they step down to three days, for three or four weeks. They then enter the IOP phase, which meets three times a week for two weeks, followed by a transition to once or twice a week. The IOP sessions are three hours in length. There is more flexibility with the scheduling of this program, allowing clients to attend school or work.

Treatment consists of individual and group therapy. Twelve-step programs are not introduced, but the seeking safety model is employed. Process groups focus of psychoeducation, trauma issues, family and interpersonal conflicts. Group sessions address issues of distorted thinking, spirituality, mindfulness, positive thinking, conflict resolution, distress tolerance and stages of change. The goal is to help clients form health habits, which build self-esteem, with concrete plans for dealing with challenges that come with recovery, such as holiday and weekend planning. Positive thinking and grief and loss counseling are also discussed, alongside substance abuse and mental health education.

A CADC or LCSW facilitates the groups, which never exceed 10 clients in size.

In Summary

Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital offers outpatient substance abuse treatment that focuses mainly on those with a dual diagnosis. Their treatment allows clients the benefit of psychiatric and medical staff, while still being introduced to therapeutic modalities that assist with long-term recovery from chemical dependency. While treatment is typically short, it is highly-individualized and clients are able to extend treatment if needed. This is a great option for those needing treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
