Los Angeles CaliforniaWatts Health: House of Uhuru Review

Named after the Swahili work for “freedom,” Watts Health’s House of Uhuru provides residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment services in Watts, a historical and culturally-diverse neighborhood of South Los Angeles, California. Watts Health was established in 2002 and offers primary care medical services as well as substance abuse treatment. Its residential program treats both men and women and lasts anywhere from six months to a year.

Accommodations and Food

Residents are housed in treatment facility in a grassy stretch of Watts, a few miles from downtown Los Angeles. House of Uhuru treats up to 66 clients at one time, and men and women are housed in different sections of the facility. Residents have two or three roommates, and women can bring young children five years and younger into treatment with them.

The facility has recreational areas for watching TV and reading, with separate common rooms for men and women. All meals are prepared by the facility’s kitchen staff with residents assisting as they rotate through a series of chore assignments. Clients cannot bring cell phones or computers into treatment, and the facility is smoke-free. On-site childcare is available, and young children reside in rooms with their mothers.

Treatment and Staff

Upon admission, clients are given a treatment plan that includes daily group and individual therapy as-needed. Clients are given random drug screenings.

The treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists such as MFTs and MSWs and addiction counselors with the CADC credential. Therapists are trained in CBT and teach anger management and coping skills. While they can address co-occurring disorders in treatment, clients needing on-going dual diagnosis support are transported to a nearby mental health clinic for additional therapy and medication management.

The House of Uhuru believes in the 12-step framework and requires clients to attend AA/NA meetings while in treatment, the frequency determined by their treatment plan. Watts Health has a transportation service that can take clients to off-site meetings and other medical care appointments.

As clients stabilize in their recovery, they work with case managers to identify vocational training programs and other opportunities to further their health, employment and educational goals.

Extras

After 30 days of successful participation in treatment, clients can have family members visit from 12 to 3 pm on Sundays. For aftercare, many alumni of the residential track step down to the outpatient program for on-going support.

In Summary

For over a decade, Watts Health’s House of Uhuru has provided long-term substance abuse treatment for men and women in South Los Angeles. Watts Health’s transportation fleet, wide range of medical services and continuing care in its outpatient program ensure that clients receive the support and attention they need to make a successful transition from residential care to independent living.
