The House of GratitudeThe Basics

Located in Palm Desert, California, The House of Gratitude was founded in 2010. Recently, the founder moved away and a new owner took over, with the mission of continuing the provision of structured and safe sober living to men in recovery. The House of Gratitude is the first sober living home in Palm Desert to be endorsed by the Sober Living Network, Riverside County Sober Living Coalition.

Accommodations and Amenities

The ranch-style house is located on a quiet residential street, and accommodates no more than seven clients. Clients are paired in double-occupancy furnished rooms, and there is a master bedroom that holds three men. The house boasts a private backyard with a covered patio, which includes a table, chairs, hammock and a Barbeque grill. Amenities include Wi-Fi, Direct TV, laundry facilities and an extra refrigerator.

The living room is emblematic of the house’s bachelor style décor with black leather couches facing a flat screen TV next to an entertainment center stocked with DVDs. The recreation room adjacent to the living room includes a blue couch and a pool table. The house is decorated in earth tones except for the game room’s shamrock green wall, which provides a bright accent. Clients are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. A house manager resides on the premises.

Rules and Regulations

Clients must have completed detox prior to admission. A six-month length of stay is recommended, but not required. House of Gratitude is rooted in the 12 steps, and clients must attend six weekly meetings for the first 90 days. After that period, three weekly 12-step meetings are obligatory. Other requirements include performance of daily household chores, finding a sponsor plus maintenance of an active relationship, execution of step work and attendance at house meetings. The house meetings include public speaking exercises and peer support. Additionally, the meetings host guest male speakers with long-term abstinence.

Clients requiring outpatient treatment, mental health services or life coaching are provided with appropriate referrals. Residents must be out of bed before nine am Mondays through Fridays, and all beds must be made. Unemployed men must be out of the house every weekday between four and six hours until they secure a job. At House Of Gratitude, the curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. There is a zero tolerance policy for relapsed clients who are immediately evicted from the premises. No-shows after curfew are also dismissed from the house.

Extras

House of Gratitude celebrates the sobriety birthday its clients by hosting a barbecue or party, which are open to the local recovery community.

In Summary

The House of Gratitude has a good reputation in the Palm Desert community, and boasts former clients who have been clean and sober for a long time and who are active in the recovery community. For men looking for a highly structured and immaculate residence where the 12 steps become part of their lives and housemates become sobriety brothers, the House of Gratitude is the right place.
