Sandy’s Place Review
Sandy’s Place is the women’s branch of the Orange County, California-based Hotel California by the Sea substance abuse treatment organization. Hotel California started in 2013 as one sober living home for men and expanded quickly to include detox, gender-specific residential treatment programs and two outpatient facilities. Sandy’s Place specializes in helping women with co-occurring disorders and providing trauma-informed care in Newport Beach. Sandy’s place was founded by and named for Sandy Taylor. Taylor serves as the Executive Director and has dedicated her life to helping women recover since she got sober in December of 1984.
Accommodations and Food
Located the upscale Newport Heights neighborhood, Sandy’s Place is a two-story modern home that is elegantly decorated and spacious. The program only has space for six women at a time, which allows for personal attention and a deep bond between the clients as they experience treatment together. There are three bedrooms; one is private and the other two are shared. The shared rooms are very large and all beds are queen sized. There are three bathrooms, one for each room, with marble countertops, a bathtub and separate shower. Each client gets a dresser and plenty of closet space.
The shared living room and well-stocked kitchen are downstairs, furnished with leather couches, a big screen TV with cable, state-of-the-art appliances and a dining table that seats six. The kitchen comes with the bonus of a personal chef who prepares all the meals and snacks for the clients, working closely with each individual and a nutritionist to ensure the most healthy and delicious choices.
Treatment and Staff
Clients at Sandy’s Place receive an initial evaluation that determines whether they need detox and if the program would be a good fit. Women who need detox have the option to complete that process on-site or an an outpatient basis. Detox is supervised by a physician and medications are prescribed to ensure that the process is as safe and comfortable as possible. In most cases the complete detox process can be done in less than a week.
The residential program can last anywhere from 30 to 90 days. Personal devices like cell phones and computers are allowed after an initial “blackout” period of 14 days. This time allows for each client to get acclimated to the program schedule and new surroundings. Group and individual sessions incorporate both traditional styles of treatment, like CBT, DBT and EMDR, as well as holistic options like hypnotherapy or music, art and equine therapy. Daily treatment is supplemented by mandatory 12-step meetings and each client is expected to attend at least five outside AA or NA meetings per week.
Step work and journaling are a part of the daily schedule. Frequent psychoeducation groups and classes cover relapse prevention, coping skills and the science behind addiction. After clients complete the residential program, they have the option to step down to one of Hotel California’s outpatient programs for continuing care.
On-site staff are available for support and guidance 24/7. The treatment team at Sandy’s Place consists of Master’s-level case workers, therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, nutritionists, fitness trainers and trauma specialists.
Extras
Weekly recreational activities include deep-sea fishing, whale watching, sailing in the facility’s 65-foot yacht, spa days for mani-pedis and massages and movie nights. During free time, clients can explore the nearby beach, take a yoga class or take part in a group meditation. A gym membership is included with access to an on-site personal trainer.
A monthly three-day family program allows family members to attend meetings with clients to learn about addiction and reconnect by going on fun sober outings.
In Summary
Sandy’s Place offers luxury care for women in an intimate environment. Residents are provided with plenty of structure, but not lacking in comfort. With the benefit of the larger Hotel California network and a beautiful location, this is an excellent option for women seeking a sad space to begin their recovery.
