The Basics
Hotel California by the Sea is an Orange County, California-based substance abuse treatment organization. Hotel California started in 2013 as one sober living home for men and expanded quickly to include detox, gender-specific residential treatment programs for men, women and young adults and two outpatient facilities. The young adult programs specialize in helping those between the ages of 18 and 30 stay sober and build life skills.
Accommodations and Food
Hotel California has two beautiful gender-specific facilities for their young adult program. The upscale houses are in close proximity to the beach, shopping and AA/NA meetings. The large, two-story men’s home can sleep up to nine clients at a time, with double and triple-occupancy shared rooms. The shared bathrooms have marble floors, large tubs and steam showers. There is an updated kitchen and dining room and a private patio on well-manicured grounds. The women’s house offers accommodations for six women with sleek hardwood floors, marble counter tops and a beautiful outside lounge area with a pool.
The homes all have full or queen beds with luxury linens provided. There’s free WiFi, Netflix, cable TV, barbecue grills and an executive chef who serves several healthy, organic dinners each week to the clients. Residents receive a $75 food card each week and are provided transportation to and from the grocery store to buy the rest of their food.
Treatment and Staff
When clients enter the program, an intake counselor designs an individualized treatment plan. The young adult program emphasizes building practical life skills to help clients have a successful, sober life. A case worker, a psychiatrist and medical staff are available when needed. A stay at Hotel California by the Sea usually lasts 30 to 90 days, depending on the substances the client has used. If clients require detox, the process can take place on-site or on an outpatient basis under the supervision of a team of medical professionals. The facility offers Vivitrol, a highly monitored monthly injection treatment that in some cases can reduce opiate cravings.
Hotel California uses a variety of therapeutic techniques, including CBT, DBT and the Gestalt method. Clients are evaluated by a psychiatrist who provides those in need of dual diagnosis support with individual therapy that addresses co-occurring disorders and relapse prevention.
Clients participate in specialized group therapy tracks including basic life skills and career readiness programs. These groups teach things like resume writing, job interview skills and how to open a bank account and balance a checkbook. Once they have completed life skills and job readiness programs, there is a job placement service that helps match each individual with a job that fits their interests and qualifications.
All clients are also encouraged to attend daily AA/NA meetings, which are held on-site. Thursdays and Saturdays, the program hosts meetings in the unique setting of a yacht. The staff at Hotel California by the Sea includes LMFTs, addiction specialists, nutritionists, equine and art therapists, social workers, CADCs and case managers.
Extras
Holistic treatments like equine, art, music and adventure therapy are available. Additional amenities include weekly massage therapy, yoga on the beach, a gym membership within walking distance of each living facility, and weekend excursions such as deep-sea fishing and paddle boarding. Transportation to appointments or activities is provided.
Hotel California offers twice monthly family group therapy sessions for family members to attend with clients. Additionally, a sober companion is available for those in the program who require a little extra support.
