Horizons Family Centered Recovery ProgramHorizons Family Centered Recovery Program Residential Review

Horizons Family Centered Recovery Program provides outpatient and residential substance abuse treatment at Covenant Medical Center, a full-service hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, a mid-sized city two hours northwest of Des Moines. Covenant Medical Center is part of the Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare network, which began serving the residents of Iowa over 140 years ago.

The Horizons Family Centered Recovery Program has been in operation for over 30 years. In addition to its outpatient and residential programs, Horizons offers a detox program that lasts between two and 10 days, depending on the substance use disorder.

Accommodations and Food

Residents occupy a unit of Covenant Medical Center, a 366-bed hospital. Most residents share double-occupancy rooms, which have their own bathroom. Horizons also has three private rooms available. The unit also has an exercise room and TV room for recreation. Horizons provides a recreational therapist to clients in the evenings. Residents are not permitted cell phones and personal computers, but those who need computers to keep up with work responsibilities are provided one under supervision. The hospital cafeteria provides standard American fare to all residents.

Treatment and Staff

Clients usually stay in the residential program for three to five weeks. Each resident’s treatment plan consists of daily group and individual therapy. Groups have 15 or fewer participants and combine the Matrix Model and the 12-step framework. Residents are encouraged to attend daily 12-step meetings on-site, as well. The extensive treatment team includes physicians, Master’s-level therapists, addiction counselors, RNs and recreational therapists.

Residents with co-occurring disorders receive treatment from the Medical Center’s behavioral health therapists and psychiatrists and receive medication management, if needed.

After completing residential treatment, many of Horizons clients step down to one of its outpatient programs. Horizons is one of the few hospital residential treatment programs in Iowa and often treats individuals who cannot attend its outpatient program due to its distance from their home. In those cases, Horizons works closely with the client to locate geographically convenient outpatient treatment.

Extras

Family may visit on weekends, and Horizons hosts a family therapy group twice a week. Horizons clients are able to access the case management services of Covenant Medical Center during their treatment for help coordinating care and locating other community resources.

In Summary

For over 30 years, Horizons Family Centered Recovery Program has provided residents of Iowa with outpatient and residential services at Waterloo’s Covenant Medical Center. With its on-site full-service medical and behavioral health departments as well as a detox unit, the residential program might be an especially effective option for those whose substance abuse exists alongside significant medical and mental health challenges.
