Horizon Village Review

Founded in 1994 in the tiny town of Sanborn, New York—about 20 miles from Buffalo—Horizon Village is an inpatient drug treatment facility offering an integrated approach to meet the medical, psychological, spiritual, cultural and environmental needs of the client. The campus also houses Freedom Village, a substance abuse facility for male military veterans. Both Horizon and Freedom villages are part of Horizon Health Services, a larger mental health provider serving nine towns in Western New York.

Accommodations and Food

Horizon was designed for resident comfort and safety. Located on three acres, it is a modern, one-story, handicapped-accessible 50-bed facility with 24 double-occupancy and two single-occupancy rooms. There’s a dining hall, fitness center, gardens, picnic area, softball diamond and basketball court on-site.

Meals are provided in a cafeteria-style, self-serve setting.

Treatment and Staff

Horizon offers substance abuse education and support for co-occurring disorders such as PTSD. In addition to group and individual therapy, it has family programs, programs for young adults, gender-specific treatment for women, health, wellness and fitness programs, 12-step work, vocational and educational assessment and medical and psychiatric evaluations as well as GED and college prep workshops. On-site spirituality groups are also available.

Length of residential treatment varies depending on need, but an average comprehensive, individualized recovery program here is typically 120 days. Detox is not available on-site but at the nearby affiliated 31-bed Terrace House in Buffalo.

Upon admission to Horizon, clients undergo a 14-day “eclipse” period in which they have no access to pay phones or off-site activities. (Infractions of rules may result in immediate discharge. Privilege levels, including participation in off-site activities, increase as the client’s treatment progresses.)

The staff at Horizon is a multidisciplinary team with expertise in medicine, social work, nursing, alcoholism, substance abuse, family counseling, psychology, psychiatry and activities therapy. A financial case manager also meets with the client on admission day.

Freedom Village, which is adjacent to the original Horizon residential center, offers chemical dependency treatment as well as specialized individual and family services for PTSD and other mental health issues experienced by veterans of military service.

Extras

The campus Wellness Center has a 10,500-square-foot gymnasium and fitness facility.

The Horizon family program allows loved ones to attend counseling twice a week and on Saturday mornings. Special family events are planned approximately once per quarter.

In Summary

With multiple recovery services on an enclosed campus, Horizon Village should appeal to potential clients interested in a comprehensive, supportive and yet strict option that focuses on addiction as well as co-occurring disorders.
