San Antonio TexasHorizon Sober Living Review

Founded on January 7, 2016, by Ben Hammond and DA Hughes III in San Antonio, Texas, Horizon Sober Living provides 12-step based sober living for men. Both Hughes and Hammond are in recovery. Horizon is two blocks away from Club 12, an AA meeting hall, which provides 100 weekly 12-step meetings and in close proximity to SAM Ministry, which provides volunteer opportunities for residents who want to be of service.

Accommodations and Amenities

Horizon is located in a ranch-style home on a quiet residential street. The house accommodates ten clients who share double or triple occupancy furnished rooms. The bedrooms include twin beds with striped comforters, small area rugs, a dresser, hanging artwork and desk lamps. The windows are covered with wooden shutters, lending a rustic ambience. Horizon has a huge din and a private backyard with a barbecue. Amenities include laundry facilities, cleaning products, dish soap, laundry detergent, bedding, coffee and cooking utensils.

Clients are responsible for purchasing their own groceries, and a fully equipped kitchen is available for meal preparation. Multiple refrigerators and ample pantry space is provided for food storage. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas. Hughes, who is also the house manager, lives on the premises.

Rules and Regulations

At Horizon, potential clients must have already completed detox. Newly arrived residents undergo a seven-day blackout period which gives them time to assimilate to house rules, as well as to their new home. The men must attend 90 AA/NA/CA meetings in 90 days. After that period, five weekly 12-step meetings are required. Residents must obtain a sponsor within two weeks of their arrival. They must enroll in school or acquire a full-time job during that time period. If they don’t, they must commit to 20 hours of weekly community service.

Other weekly obligations include attendance at the in-house Wednesday night Big Book study meeting, working the steps, maintaining active sponsor/sponsee relationships, participation at the accountability meeting and performance of household chores. All tasks must be done before leaving the house. Romantic relationships are forbidden within the first 90 days.

Horizon has a zero tolerance policy for disrespectful behavior, breaking anonymity, stealing or other intolerable conduct. Additionally, clients are subject to random drug and alcohol screenings. Those who have relapsed are subject to immediate expulsion from the premises. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Extras

Hammond is also the owner of Clubhouse at Monticello Park, another male-only sober living home in San Antonio.

In Summary

While this is a new sober living home, it’s a great choice for men seeking a structured 12-step based atmosphere. There are a lot of rules, but all designed to teach residents accountability, which is an important tool for building a successful foundation in recovery. Being responsible also helps men achieve success in their personal lives.
