Horizon Behavioral Health Review

Horizon Behavioral Health is a treatment organization with three outpatient facilities in southeast Georgia. Horizon specializes in the care of clients struggling with substance use disorders, learning disorders and mental health issues. Founded in 2011, Horizon offers a multi-faceted treatment approach that integrates several therapeutic methods including individual and family therapy rooted in evidence-based modalities, psychological and psychiatric assessments, medication management and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

Treatment and Staff

Horizon facilities offer individualized treatment programs that are tailored to meet the unique needs of the client. Before beginning treatment, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment process that helps to determine the most effective plan going forward. Throughout treatment, the team continually updates and adjusts the client’s care plan with the newest information. While the length of care varies depending on the specific needs of the individual client, TMS participants typically engage in five sessions a week for between a month and six weeks. Each session lasts between 20 and 40 minutes.

The facility employs a holistic model of care that includes evidence-based therapies, medication management, psychological assessments and TMS. Clients engage in individual, group and family therapy with therapists trained in CBT, MET and EMDR to treat trauma as a component of a client’s current mental health condition. Twelve-step is not integrated into treatment here.

Horizon is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of MDs, PsyDs, PhDs, Master’s-level counselors, nurse practitioners and social workers. Medication management is available for clients with co-occurring disorders in need of dual diagnosis support.

Horizon locations are located in close proximity to Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. As such, the facilities treat a number of veterans. Horizon accepts TRICARE, the healthcare program for uniformed service members.

In Summary

Horizon Behavioral Health provides comprehensive psychiatric and psychological care for clients of all ages in southeast Georgia. The facility provides evidence-based therapy, medication management, assessments and the cutting edge TMS technique that uses a magnetic pulse to charge specific regions of the brain vital to mental health. For area clients coping with learning disorders, substance use disorders or mental illnesses, and seeking a facility with both traditional and cutting edge therapies, Horizon is an excellent option.

I want to be clear, the above review was intended for Horizon Behavioral Health in Lynchburg, VA. I cannot speak concerning other locations with the same name.

I went there today for emergency admission and was absolutely disgusted. They allowed me to go through three and a half hours of waiting rooms, forms, speaking with people, paying my co-pay, and more just to tell me that they were not the right service for me. I made it abundantly clear that I needed to see a psychiatrist ASAP due to an increasingly unstable mental state. At 20 years old my short-term memory and thought processing abilities are practically nonexistent, I am suffering from 4 critical mental conditions, and desperately want to die. After going through their ridiculously long sign-up process, I was told I could eventually see a psychiatrist… IN 3 MONTHS! When I explained again that this is a critical emergency, and my mentality is so unstable I never know whether I will even make it through the next day, they basically said, “oh, you’ll have to go see another service in that case.”

Are you kidding me??? I did not provide any new information! They could have told me that as soon as I showed up and saved me my time. Even though I clearly explained my needs, I got no contrary explanation of their services until I had wasted my time and money. Not only that, but I got no refund or anything despite the fact that, if I knew what they do (a very long-term care program), I could have immediately told someone in my shoes that this isn’t the right place, and saved them the time. Very frustrated with the whole situation. This would be like if someone showed up to join the army saying “I’d like to enlist for the Navy,” and the army let them go through a whole sign-up program before telling them they weren’t the navy.

Basically, if you need emergency services, run from Horizon as fast as possible. I’m still trying to figure out where to go, but for the love of God don’t go here because they won’t tell you you’re at the wrong place until you’ve given them your time, money, and about every bit of personal information they can squeeze out of you.

I was also not super impressed with the psychologist I talked to. Maybe it’s just personality preference, but she didn’t seem nearly as knowledgeable or helpful as other people I’ve seen.

On the bright side, the Admissions receptionists were the friendly receptionists I’ve ever seen. Props to them.
