Hope, Health & Healing Review

Hope, Help & Healing is a faith-based substance abuse facility providing residential and outpatient treatment for men, ages 18 and over, in Auburn, California. Bordered by the beautiful American River Canyon and nestled in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Auburn is often named as one of the best places to live in Northern California. It is from this picturesque location that Hope, Help & Healing has been offering its services to residents of Placer County and surrounding areas for the past eight years.

Accommodations and Food

The men’s residential treatment facility at Hope, Health & Healing is located about 10 miles from the main office/outpatient center. The four-bedroom, two-bathroom house holds up to six men with a separate room for the house manager who lives on the premises. There is a kitchen, dining area and shared common room with a TV for free time. Laundry facilities are provided on site—the men do all of their own chores, including general housework and kitchen duties.

The staff shops for all of the groceries and the residents prepare all of their own meals. The men eat three meals per day and special dietary requests are limited. However,  a salad bar is available at the evening meal. There is also a barbeque in the backyard if anyone is so inclined. This is a non-smoking facility and cell phones are prohibited, though clients may make phone calls from the outpatient center after 30 days.

Treatment and Staff

Hope, Health & Healing offers faith-based treatment; detox and medical management are not provided and neither is dual diagnosis support. All potential clients must be drug- and alcohol-free for at least one week—random drug tests are part of the treatment protocol. Residential treatment is 90 days in duration.

A typical day begins at 6 am with morning prayer and meditation, breakfast is at 7 and morning chores start at 8 am. Bible Study group begins promptly at 10 am at the house. After lunch, clients are driven to the outpatient center where they continue with group therapy and classes. Topics include process group, peer pressure, CBT, 12-step study (based on Christian teachings) and vocational training classes. Clients have individual therapy with their assigned counselor twice a week.

Residents return to the house at 5 pm to prepare dinner. On Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings, clients attend church services. All other weeknights, residents attend off-site Celebrate Recovery meetings, an alternative to the 12 steps. Residents double scrub the house on Saturdays until afternoon visiting hours begin. The men can see guests at the outpatient facility after 30 days and only with the approval of their primary counselor. After church on Sundays, those who have 30 days or longer in residency are allowed to leave the facility with another client on a six-hour pass.

Licensed substance abuse counselors facilitate all group and individual sessions, for a client-to-staff ratio of five-to-one.

Though Hope, Health & Healing does offer outpatient services, potential clients must have completed residential treatment to qualify. There are two levels of outpatient; intensive outpatient (IOP) is the most structured, where clients meet three times per week for nine hours. One of those hours is for individual therapy. Group size is limited to nine and topics are the same as residential. Regular outpatient clients meet twice a week for four hours and individual therapy is also once per week. The duration for both outpatient and IOP is 90 days. A licensed substance abuse counselor facilitates all groups and individual sessions.

Extras

Hope, Health & Healing also offers sober living for those who have completed residential treatment. There are two sober living houses just a few miles away from the main office. As with residential, there are six men to a house and the length of stay is 90 days. At this juncture, men are expected to be employed full- or part-time, attend either day or evening outpatient groups and continue all of their household chores. While the residents have more freedom than in residential, they must follow work and counseling schedules and curfew rules.

In Summary

The philosophy at Hope, Health & Healing is that clients are recovering, rejecting the notion that once an addict, always an addict. The main text is the Bible and belonging to a church group is an essential component of their teaching. While most of the men are ex-convicts, the program could appeal to any man looking for this kind of religious recovery. A caveat: while the website lists numerous locations for this program, the Auburn facility is the only one still in operation.
