Austin TexasHope Harbor Recovery Review

Founded in 2013 in Austin, Texas, by Justin Harvey, Eloise DeJoria and Jim Walker, who are co-founders of the Partners in Recovery network, Hope Harbor Recovery provides extended care and sober living for men and women in early recovery. The Partners in Recovery continuum of care includes The Arbor, a drug rehab located in Austin.

Accommodations and Food

Hope Harbor Extended Care accommodates 14 men, and 14 women in gender-specific houses. Clients are lodged between four and five to a room, and as they progress in treatment, they step down to double or triple-occupancy rooms. The Hyde Park House for men is a neoclassical style mansion with an outdoor deck on the second floor, and the house for women is colonial style.

A quadruple-occupancy room in the women’s house includes four twin beds with dark wood headboards, plush white comforters, nightstands, dressers and modern style lamps. The softly lit, wood tiled rooms have high ceilings, windows, ceiling fans and wall sconces, all lending to a serene atmosphere. While food is provided, residents cook their own meals, and participate in clean up.

The sober living homes, which are a step down from extended care, include one female-only house with nine women, and three male-only houses, each lodging between nine and 11 men. Between two and five clients share fully furnished rooms. At the sober living homes, residents are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in spacious, fully equipped kitchens.

At all houses, amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV, and laundry facilities. The men’s house has a pool, a fitness room and a Jacuzzi. All houses include live-in staff.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to admission, clients undergo a lengthy assessment, and a house tour. This is done to ensure that Hope Harbor Recovery is a suitable fit, as well as to determine the appropriate level of care.Clients must have undergone detox, and typically most individuals have undergone primary care at a drug rehab. The extended care program is 90 days long, and includes eight weeks of Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Weekly treatment includes group therapy, individual therapy, case management, and required attendance at 12-step meetings.

During the first two weeks, clients attend daily 12-step meetings. After that time, they must attend a minimum of four weekly 12-step meetings. At Hope Harbor Recovery, evidence-based modalities, including CBT and EMDR are utilized during therapy. Group topics include spiritual meditation, trauma, emotional management skills, mindfulness, self-esteem, processing, guilt and shame, eating disorders or other self-harming behaviors and co-occurring disorders. During the afternoon, groups tend to be smaller, but during the evenings, there can be up to 15 clients in a session.

Other requirements include looking for work, getting a sponsor, performing household chores and being at the weekly house meeting. Clients requiring medication management for co-occurring disorders, are provided with medical referrals, and are transported to psychiatric appointments. During the first two weeks, extended care homes have a 10 pm curfew, and after that time, the curfew is midnight seven days a week. After clients complete extended care, they are offered the option of stepping down to a sober living home.

Staff includes a PhD-level licensed MFT, LCDC, two Master’s-level LCDCs, an operations manager, house managers, extended care recovery managers and supplies coordinator.

Extras

After IOP is completed, aftercare includes two weekly group sessions, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
