Homewood Health Centre is a 300-bed mental health and addiction treatment facility located on 50 acres on the banks of the Speed River in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. With over 130 years of experience and a network of more than 4,500 employees and clinical experts, Homewood is one of Canada’s largest facilities of its kind. The continuum of care includes assessments, outpatient and inpatient treatment, aftercare and family support services for both individuals and organizations. Homewood provides specialty therapy groups tailored to the needs of healthcare professionals, first responders and for those with co-occurring disorders. Homewood also offers specialized groups for young adults and seniors.

The Residence at Homewood Health

The main Homewood facility is a sprawling brick mansion with a number of outbuildings. There is a fitness center, cafe, gift shop and bowling alley. The expansive grounds include year-round walking trails, a tennis court, a labyrinth, gazebo and plenty of strategically placed benches for outdoor reflection time. Clients share semi-private rooms with twin beds and en suite bathrooms.

Three healthy meals a day are served in the central cafeteria. The café offers snacks and treats between meals.

Treatment and Staff

Clients must receive a referral from a healthcare professional and complete a physical exam and psychiatric assessment prior to admission. Length of treatment is typically 60 to 90 days, depending on each client’s individualized treatment plan. The program is designed for those who are 19 years of age or older, mentally and physically able to participate in an intensive group-based treatment program and are willing to co-operate with supervised random urine tests. Supervised detox is available on-site and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is available on a short-term basis only. If a client is on methadone at the time of admission, they must be stable at a dosage of 30 mg or less per day, have abstinence as a goal and be willing to participate in 12-step meetings.

Clients live in a structured setting that focuses on taking personal responsibility. Treatment includes individual, group, family and recreational therapy; written assignments, addiction education, case management and developing life skills. Residents participate in group therapy four hours a day, with a minimum of one hour of individual therapy a week.

The staff at Homewood includes doctors, nurses, Master’s-level counselors, LPNs, therapists, CADCs, case managers and licensed teachers.

Staff helps clients plan for outpatient treatment once they are ready to leave the program. Referrals are available for Homewood’s aftercare programs.

The family program is a two-day group session focusing on recovery issues for family members 19 years and older. It provides a chance to connect with other people in the same situation and receive accurate information about the disease. Family members are responsible for their own meals and accommodations and there is a small fee for the program.

The Homewood alumni foundation offers a yearly Spiritual Renewal Service. This annual event that provides alumni members, staff, volunteers, patients and board members a unique opportunity to celebrate recovery in their daily lives. The 2015 service was attended by approximately 600 people.

In Summary

The Homewood Health Centre program is an ideal residential treatment center for men and women who are seeking a structured environment primarily based on the 12 steps. Clients learn valuable life skills and work through underlying problems with addiction and mental health.

I was there in 2016 in the addiction program (Alcohol) and I would not consider this a treatment center. There is nor treatement per say. Its just group discussions with a facilitator and daily AA meetings. The days are filled with activities that are meant to be a diversion. You dont really get help from staff. You only get help from yourself if you want. You dont need to go there to help yourself. Get a sponsor and go to AA meetings and create your own discussion group with people you meet at meetings. On a positive note, the place is nice, the food is good and the amenities are good as well. Just not worth the money.

Homewood is heavily skills based with little to no processing work. While skills are important and beneficial, the lack of processing is extremely disappointing. The “Residence” (shown in pictures) is not where the average person is housed, it’s for folks of 6-figured incomes. The average patient will find themselves housed in the main building which largely resembles a hospital. Most rooms are indeed semi private, however few of them offer even a privacy curtain, and a lot of them do not in fact have ensuit lavatories. The above description is highly inaccurate and somewhat deceptive.

Should also note, there is little individual therapy and it’s highly unlikely to see your psychiatrist on a weekly basis. Patients are not automatically assigned a social worker for counselling/individual therapy; while some are referred, many have to advocate/request social work themselves and few realize that they can.

Homewood also employs MSW’s in all of their programs. It’s the social works who solely deliver the Family Program. I’ve been one of them for over 20 years.
