Homewood Health Centre is a large Canadian network. It offers treatment for addiction, eating disorders and co-occurring disorders. Its Eating Disorder Program (EDP) is open to men and women 16 and older who are suffering from anorexia and bulimia, along with any co-existing issues. The treatment for EDP is mainly group based. It focuses on building new life skills while taking responsibility for recovery.
Accommodations and Food
The EDP residential program has 21 beds. They’re located in the main residential building on the treatment campus. The facility sits on over 50 acres. It contains several recreational areas, gardens, a greenhouse, library, and chapel. The facility is very modern and spacious, featuring comfortable, stylish furnishings, and new appliances. Some of the common areas include a sunroom, large living room, and state of the art gym. There is also a shared dining room and updated kitchen.
The staff prepares meals and snack for the EDP clients. They are healthy and balanced for proper caloric intake. During the first couple of weeks, clients eat all the meals in the EDP unit under supervision. As they progress through treatment, they have meals in the shared dining room.
Treatment and Staff
The EDP runs at least 12 weeks for bulimia treatment. It’s a bit longer for clients struggling with anorexia, especially if they need to gain some weight. The EDP doesn’t just focus on making sure clients eat enough or stop over exercising. Rather, it explores the issues that might have potentially led to disordered eating. Clients discuss ways to express their emotions in a healthy manner as well as how to set boundaries and develop coping skills.
Each client follows a personalized treatment track and sets achievable goals throughout the program. During the day they participate in group therapy that covers relapse prevention and life skills. There are daily weigh ins in the morning, and process groups after meal times. The weekends and evenings consist of free time for socializing and writing assignments.
Homewood’s EDP utilizes a number of different treatment approaches such as CBT, DBT and Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The staff can facilitate medication management for dual diagnosis clients.
The EDP staff includes nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, dietitians, LCSW,s LMFTs, occupational therapist, recreational therapists, peer counselors and behavioral techs.
Extras
Family involvement is an essential element to the EDP at Homewood. Two therapists lead several group sessions for families. There is also a family day filled with a number of therapeutic activities.
