Ontario CaliforniaHomes of Promise Review

Founded in 2014, Homes of Promise aka Izzy’s Place offers Christian-based sober living for men at houses in LaVerne and Ontario, California. Izzy’s Place is named after the late Izzy Farrach who was a co-founder. Homes of Promise utilizes Celebrate Recovery in their protocol, with the hopes that clients seek comfort in Christ, while staying clean and sober.

Accommodations and Amenities

Built in 1917, Izzy’s Place in LaVerne is an Edwardian-style 4,000 square foot home that sits on half an acre. The house accommodates 20 men, who share double, triple or quadruple-occupancy furnished rooms that include bunk beds or twins and cubicles for storage. The house includes three full baths. Built in 1907, Izzy’s Place in Ontario is an elegant craftsman style house that accommodates up to 18 clients who are housed in groups of two to four in spacious rooms with bunk beds, ample closet space and dressers. Both homes have vintage Americana-style furnishings, exemplified by cherry wood floors and door trim, old-fashioned chandeliers and formal dining room décor.

Men are responsible for their own groceries, which are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include Wi-Fi, Cable TV, a landline phone, house computer and laundry facilities. Staff lives on the premises to provide supervision.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients undergo a 20-minute telephone interview with staff to ensure that Homes of Promise is an appropriate fit. Preferably, clients have completed between 30 and 90 days of primary care at a drug rehab, but in all cases detox is mandatory. Men who are interested in attending Homes of Promise, but require detox, are provided with medical referrals. A commitment of one-year length of stay is required.

Within 30 days of their arrival, clients are required to obtain both a recovery friend and a mentor or sponsor. A recovery friend can be another resident, but must be someone who is clean and sober. The purpose of having a recovery friend is to practice and learn accountability. Weekly requirements include meeting with a sponsor, attending regular Celebrate Recovery, as well as 12-step meetings, participating in the Bible Study event, Friday Night Light and being at the house meeting.

Residents must also find full-time employment. Curfews are arranged on an individual basis, depending on the client’s employment schedule. Clients undergo random drug and alcohol screening. At Homes of Promise, a zero tolerance policy is enforced and relapsed clients are immediately evicted.

Extras

Other services include vocational guidance, time management tips, prayer counseling, life coaching and goal planning.

Homes of Promise is a member of the Sober Living Network, San Bernardino County Sober Living Coalition.

In Summary

Homes of Promise is situated in two gorgeous historic homes which provide a calming setting for men who are seeking Christ as their Higher Power. With that said, this fairly new community is perfect for men seeking such a milieu. For clients who are keen on a faith-based environment, the search for the perfect sober living ends here.
