His Way Recovery House Review
His Way Recovery House is a Christian organization that operates faith-based sober living homes in Manteca, a small California town about 75 miles east of San Francisco. Providing a supportive living environment that integrates the 12-step philosophy and other Christian principles, His Way Recovery House addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual effects of addiction.
His Way Recovery was founded by Al Deardoff in 1998, when he started a Christian recovery group at his local Baptist Church. Deardoff, who has been clean and sober since 1996, kept those recovery meetings going until 2002, when he opened the first His Way Recovery House and it became a non-profit corporation. Since then, His Way has grown to 11 houses in the Manteca community—seven for men and four for women.
Accommodations and Amenities
The His Way Recovery House facilities accommodate up to 65 clients total. The homes vary, but typically the modest, comfortable houses sleep two or three residents per bedroom in twin or bunk beds. Each bedroom has closet space and a shared dresser. The shared bathrooms have baths or showers and cabinets to store personal belongings. Each house has a laundry area and all cleaning supplies are provided.
The kitchens are fully equipped and stocked with basic food and cooking supplies. Clients are responsible for their own shopping and meal preparation, and are encouraged to eat family-style.
Rules and Regulations
All potential clients at His Way Recovery House must have completed detox prior to admission. Residents must agree to live a faith-based lifestyle and completely dedicate themselves to a program of recovery. Each client must be either completing chores, working or seeking employment during the day. All house chores must be done daily and everyone is expected to keep their personal and shared spaces clean. All residents must be up and out of the house between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm and curfew is at 11 pm nightly.
The home uses principles from the Christian faith, 12-step fellowships and Celebrate Recovery. All residents must attend a minimum of three meetings per week including one Bible study, AA/NA, Celebrate Recovery or His Way worship service. Residents are required to seek sponsorship or discipleship with the support group of their choice and follow the suggested guidelines of that group. Studying the Bible is required.
His Way Recovery House requires that all house rules and staff be respected at all times. No profanity, fighting or stealing is allowed; they are all considered offenses meriting eviction. No drugs or alcohol are permitted on the premises and consumption of any will result in immediate eviction. Residents are tested at random with urinalysis and a Breathalyzer to ensure sobriety.
