Hillsides Review
Hillsides of Pasadena, California, is a non-profit that offers a youth residential program for young people who are in need of intensive services due to behavioral health concerns or have been removed from their homes temporarily. The residential programs are highly structured with the aim to shorten the time that clients are away from their families within a caring and open therapeutic environment. Treatment is trauma informed and based on evidence-based approaches.
Accommodations and Food
Clients in the residential program live on the main campus, which is set on 17 acres of park-like land. There are five cottages where clients stay that are set throughout the grounds and three that are off campus that cater to the older group of kids and teaches independant living skills. The campus also contains a library, nursing station, a playground, arts and rec center and swimming pool. The cottages sleep five or six in each and provide all the comforts of home. Fully furnished with twin beds, dressers and storage space. There are also small kitchens and dining areas, and living rooms with TVs.
The younger clients have their meals prepared and served to them every day, while the older clients learn how to prepare their own meals and are taken on grocery shopping trips to learn how to meal plan.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment in the residential program includes the family members and clients and works together through therapy to repair relationships and improve communication. The young clients in the program may be there for a variety of reasons related to mental health issues, and the main focus is to get the client back with their families as soon as possible with in an improved mental state.
Hillside uses resources from community agencies to provide comprehensive care that is facilitated by a treatment team that’s comprised of a clinician, a specialist who works with children exclusively and a parent partner. This team coordinates with the family along with community programs to create client specific plans with the desired result being that the child either returns to their home or are placed in a proper foster home. Each family’s culture is respected and these programs are made accessible 24 hours a day. Treatment typically employs a range of CBT based methods.
Hillside has a huge staff, over 400 in total. The residential programs are run by LCSWs, MFTs, case managers and trained and state certified child care specialists.
Extras
There are also recreational, music and art therapies and other expressive modalities that are used. Wraparound medical, vocational and dental services are also provided. There is an educational center at Hillside’s campus that adolescent and young adult clients have access to during their time at Hillside.
In Summary
With the main objective of helping young clients remain in their communities and with their families, the programming at Hillside is geared towards creating the most successful outcome possible. The treatment team works with the family members to create strength based, goal oriented programming and provides them with valuable, community resources.
