Higher Standard’s Sober Living is a home for women in recovery located in the Baltimore suburb of Brooklyn Park, Maryland. Their mission is providing tools so that clients become empowered and rebuild better lives. Higher Standard’s is privately owned, but receives subsidies from Anne Arundel County, which allows them to keep the cost low. Besides a 12-step approach, Higher Standard’s offers goal setting methods, onsite classes, peer support and social events.
Accommodations and Amenities
The pale yellow brick and shingled single-family house is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, and has a large fenced yard with a landscaped lawn and trees. The house accommodates up to eight women at a time. Women share double or triple-occupancy rooms, with twin beds, closets and dressers. Residents must bring their own bedding, towels and other personal items. The house has a fully equipped kitchen and living room with a TV. The monthly rent includes the cost of cable, house phone, Wi-Fi, gas, electric and water.
Residents purchase their own groceries and prepare their own meals.
Rules and Regulations
Higher Standard’s requires that prospective clients be clean and sober prior to admission. Those in need of inpatient treatment or detox are offered referrals to other Anne Arundel County substance abuse treatment facilities. Other requirements for the residents include completing a wellness recovery action plan, attending house meetings and 12-step meetings as well as participating in daily chores. The wellness recovery action plan includes working towards daily goals, as well as planning long-term and short-term goals. Residents receive assistance from staff and support from peers while they work on their plans. Residents are subject to random drug and alcohol testing and a positive test is ground for immediate eviction.
Higher Standard’s goes out of its way to help impoverished women get back on their feet after incarceration or residential treatment. The house accepts donations from the local community including clothing, cell phones, books, sponsorships towards a client’s stay and bus pass vouchers. There are a house manager, owner and assistant house manager who reside on the premises. The 30-day cost is between $520 and $600, not including a $20 house fee used towards the purchase of cleaning supplies and paper products.
Higher Standard’s offers monthly onsite classes such as yoga and nutrition. The house also holds social events such as movie nights, paint parties and cookouts.
Higher Standard’s standards require that potential clients are sober and willing to do work in AA/NA to maintain their recovery. This is certainly not a luxury sober living environment and for those seeking comprehensive services, such as outpatient counseling, this might not work. However, for those wanting an intimate atmosphere in an affordable East Coast setting, this might be the perfect match.
