Riverside CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 1976, The High Road Program was one of the first facilities to provide education and counseling services for DUI offenders in California. With four offices serving Los Angeles and Riverside Counties, programs now include prevention, anger management and federally licensed substance abuse services for adults.

Treatment and Staff

Through outpatient treatment, The High Road addresses the physical, psychological, emotional, social, vocational and spiritual components of each client. Understanding that not all substance abuse or related consequences equal addiction, the intervention and education services aim to intercede before the disease progresses. Total abstinence from alcohol and non-prescribed drugs is required during treatment and drug testing/urinalysis is performed. Though attendance at 12-step meetings isn’t required, AA/NA and self-help groups are encouraged to help establish a support system and community ties that continue after treatment ends.

All clients—whether referred though diversion programs, doctors, family, or self—complete an assessment with a LADC. This evaluation determines the best course of treatment, or suggests supplementary services for those in mandated programs. Those receiving general outpatient care attend group and individual sessions as well as individual counseling weekly. Family counseling and groups are available to assist loved ones in their relationship with the client.

For first offenders and those aged 18 to 20, programs consist of 12 hours of treatment. While other first, second and multiple-offender programs vary from three to 30 months of treatment. These court-mandated programs determine the exact number and length of education, group and individual counseling sessions. Clients are placed into programs according to state law and based on their history, criminal record and personal circumstances. Those in the multiple offender programs must also demonstrate a significant, measurable improvement in living responsibly. The High Road works with the DMV, County Probation, State Parole Board and other government agencies to ensure all clients complete treatment.

Other mandated services allow clients to attend 31.5 hours of treatment over 16 weeks, or 47 hours over 20 weeks, as a condition of probation. The batterers program requires clients convicted of a domestic violence offense to complete 104 hours of treatment over 52 weeks. This consists of education, group and individual counseling sessions that discuss and relate to the prevention of domestic violence. Additionally, anger management classes occur weekly and are for self-referred clients proactively seeking counseling for their emotional management issues, or for those court-ordered to attend. For the latter, level and duration of treatment is determined by the referring party.

Extras

Other services include medical, housing and job seeking assistance for offenders reentering society. Working closely with community organizations, The High Road provides coordinated referrals to these, and higher levels of care for clients needing detox or dual diagnosis support.

In Summary

Offering primarily court-mandated programs, clients are simply required to show up sober and polite to complete treatment. Education sessions often consist of watching addiction-related movies and there are no homework or assignments. Though inexpensive, individuals seeking serious behavioral change may be advised to supplement this program with regular attendance at self-help groups. For those hoping to meet legal requirements as painlessly as possible, The High Road Program is a good choice.
