With locations in Clarkston, Ann Arbor, Plymouth and Bingham Farms, Michigan, Heron Ridge Associates offers diverse outpatient services for men and women seeking treatment for chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is provided at the Clarkston and Plymouth facilities. CEO Deborah Scheck, a Master’s-level social worker and member of ACSW (Academy of Certified Social Workers) founded Heron Ridge Associates over 20 years ago.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admission, an evaluation with a Master’s-level social worker is conducted. Those requiring detox or inpatient treatment are offered referrals to other facilities. The Heron Ridge IOP lasts five weeks. The Clarkston schedule is from 6:30 to 9:30 pm Wednesdays through Fridays while the schedule at the Plymouth location is from 10 am to 1 pm or from 6 pm to 9 pm Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Treatment includes group therapy and individual therapy (scheduled at the discretion of the counselor).
Heron Ridge Associates combines traditional psychotherapy and a psycho-educational approach. During group, clients review different types of issues pertaining to alcoholism and drug addiction, as well as share their personal experiences. A group session averages between four and 12 clients. Group topics include drug abuse/dependency, family conflict resolution, recovery, relapse prevention, and co-occurring disorders. Learning tools, such as videos, are utilized. Additionally, peer support is vital towards treatment and recovery. Heron Ridge Associates does not employ a 12-step approach, however clients are encouraged to attend local AA/NA meetings.
Psychiatric consultations and medication management are available from staff psychiatrists. Individual therapy covers a broad range of issues, including depression, anxiety, self-esteem, women’s issues and healing the inner wounded child. Each therapist employs a unique modality, but many employ evidence-based approaches, specifically CBT, DBT and mindfulness.
IOP for children and adolescents is offered, and topics parallel those in adult IOP but are more age-appropriate.
Besides Scheck, Heron Ridge Associates boasts an impressive staff of 24 professionals including five psychiatrists, Master’s-level social workers, limited licensed psychologists and licensed professional counselors. Kurt Richards, a Master’s-level social worker is in charge of the IOP at Clarkston and usually conducts intake interviews.
In addition to substance abuse treatment, Heron Ridge Associates offers group therapy for those suffering from gambling and Internet addictions. Other programs include cancer support, divorce survival, eating disorders and gender-specific issues.
Several staff provides foreign language services including Hindi, Hebrew French, Cantonese, Mandarin and Urdu.
Heron Ridge Associates boasts an impressive staff and provides comprehensive outpatient treatment for those suffering from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. While their strength might be in providing individual counseling services, group sessions are also comprehensive. Heron Ridge Associates is probably a great option for those seeking outpatient services in conjunction with a recovery support group protocol.
