Los Angeles CaliforniaHerbert House Sober Living Review

Established in 1996 by Jace Horwitz, who serves as Executive Director, Herbert House Sober Living Residence is a high-end sober living community for professional men ages 25 and older, in Los Angeles, California. Herbert House operates on a mildly structured protocol. Their belief is that a man’s capability to achieve his external duties is necessary to his recovery. Located in the quaint Mar Vista community, which is between Marina del Rey and Culver City, Herbert House is in close proximity to Venice Beach and the Santa Monica pier, as well as adjacent to west Los Angeles and Brentwood.

Accommodations and Amenities

Herbert Houses accommodates no more than 15 clients. The facility is comprised of four cozy bungalows each housing four men, with both single and double-occupancy rooms available. There are no more than two clients in a room. The bungalows feature modern furnishings and offer a high-end, bachelor style atmosphere.

Each single-occupancy room includes a full-sized bed with a dark wood headboard, matching dresser, lamp and nightstand. A double-occupancy room includes a ceiling fan, twin beds, also with dark wood headboards, a matching dresser and a nightstand. Modern style comforters and matching pillows adorn the beds. Windows covered with beige panels allow room for ample sunlight.

Clients are responsible for their own meals, which are prepared in fully equipped kitchens stocked with utensils, dishes and kitchenware. Coffee is provided. Amenities include Wi-Fi, bedding, cleaning supplies, laundry facilities, house computers, flat screen televisions with Cable, workout and fitness area, barbeque and parking. Herbert House also features live-in staff.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients undergo an interview process to ensure that Herbert House is a proper fit. Clients must have completed detox prior to admission. A 30-day minimum length of stay is required. Herbert House does not condone a universal approach to recovery. Clients are encouraged to pursue individualized protocols, which suit their professional lifestyles. Weekly requirements include attendance at two in-house meetings and off-site recovery support group meetings, performance of minimal outdoor and indoor chores, adherence to a curfew and completion of written self-evaluations.

Residents following a 12-step protocol must work with a sponsor. Clients are required to sign in and sign out when entering or exiting the residence. While Herbert House hosts an open Thursday night men’s stag AA meeting and purports a 12-step outlook, residents are allowed to pursue and combine other recovery procedures in their lives. Some clients attend SMART Recovery meetings. Others go to AGAPE International Spiritual Center in Culver City for additional support, and some residents are enrolled in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

The curfew is midnight Mondays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Overnight and long-term passes are permitted, provided that the resident gives a 24-hour request. Random drug testing is conducted on the premises. At Herbert House, there is a zero tolerance policy for relapsed clients who are immediately dismissed from the premises. The 30-day cost is $2475 for a double-occupancy room, $1600 for a single, a $200 one-time drug screening fee and a $500 security deposit, refundable to clients in good standing. Prior to moving out, clients must give two weeks notice.

Extras

Herbert House is a member of the Sober Living Network, Los Angeles County Sober Living Coalition.

Herbert House is mentioned in the David Sheff memoir, Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction, which was about the author’s son Nic Sheff, who was once a Herbert House resident.

In Summary

Herbert House utilizes a “real-life” approach to recovery and their model has been picked up by many other sober living homes. Herbert House is not the best match for clients who suffer from co-occurring disorders or who need constant monitoring and supervision. With that said, Herbert House is a viable option for a male client who seeks a safe sober living house while he is busy working or enrolled in school. Due to high demand, those who wish to apply to Herbert House are encouraged to join the waiting list.
