Founded in 2001 in Hemet, California, Hemet Valley Recovery Center and Sage Retreat is an addiction treatment facility that provides detox and inpatient programs for substance abuse treatment. Situated at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains, Hemet is between Palm Springs and Riverside and 80 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. The beauty of the natural setting is incorporated in the rehab’s holistic treatment approach. Primary care residents participate in spiritual workshops in Idyllwild, a local mountain community, as well as ride the Palm Springs aerial tramway.
Accommodations and Food
Hemet Valley Recovery Center’s detox is on-site in a co-ed unit which looks like a hospital in gender-specific semi-private rooms with hospital beds. The unit can accommodate between 15 and 21 clients at a time. The facility also has a separate dining room where residents are served three meals a day. Entrees are basic cafeteria fare though clients are also provided with healthy snacks.
The residential program at Sage Retreat can host approximately 14 residents though the facility has a 16-bed capacity. Sage Retreat resembles a college dorm with clients paired in gender-specific rooms. A dietician prepares the menu and residents are served three meals a day along with plenty of nutritious snacks including cheese strips, yogurt, crackers and fruit. Lunches include sandwiches and other menu options include pork chops, grilled fish and chicken with sides such as salads, veggies or baked potatoes. While vegetarian preferences are not readily available, there are plenty of healthy side dishes to choose from. Coffee is served only in the mornings.
In both the detox and residential programs, cellphones are taken away upon arrival. Clients do receive limited payphone privileges. Both facilities also include laundry rooms.
Treatment and Staff
Upon intake, clients receive a comprehensive assessment and individualized treatment plans. Those in need of detox can usually be admitted that same day. On-site detox typically lasts five days with residents monitored 24/7 by doctors and nurses. Medication-assisted treatment is provided to ease withdrawal symptoms.
Those who complete detox are encouraged to enter the inpatient program at Sage Retreat which lasts for 30 days. This program uses evidence-based methods, specifically CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR in conjunction with the 12 steps. Holistic therapy is woven into the program with residents participating in yoga and meditation groups. Weekly treatment includes individual and daily group therapy, educational seminars, case management and attendance at 12-step meetings. Medication management with a licensed psychologist is provided for those in need of dual diagnosis support.
A typical daily schedule includes an AA meeting at 7 am followed by breakfast at 8 am. Meditation is at 9 am, followed by recreation at 10 am. From 11 am to noon, depending on the day, clients attend chemical dependency lectures, nutrition and HIV classes or chronic pain discussion groups. From noon to 1:30 pm, residents have a lunch break. In the afternoons from 1:30 to 5 pm, the weekly schedule includes gender-specific group therapy, peer support groups, chemical dependency lectures, yoga, recreation, a family program or an NA meeting on Friday. Dinner is served at 5 pm. From 6 to 7 pm, the weekly quota includes a relapse prevention group, chemical dependency lecture or Alanon meeting. From 7 to 8 pm, clients participate in a self-esteem group, a Let Go and Let God 12-step meeting, processing, Sober Fun or journaling sessions.
There are 31 staff members on Hemet Valley Recovery Center’s team including four medical directors, a CADC, other chemical dependency counselors, assessment nurses, case managers, registered nurses, holistic health practitioners, an acupuncturist and administrative support.
Aftercare is available as well and includes group therapy. Sober living services are also an option for those who want to continue receiving support in early sobriety. There’s also a specialized older adult residential treatment program for seniors ages 55 and older in a separate unit on campus. Treatment is largely similar the Sage Retreat program though it also includes specialized services like age-specific therapy, dual diagnosis support, psychiatric counseling and physical therapy when necessary. Similarly, the facility also offers a young adult treatment track as well as support for those with chronic pain.
Hemet Valley Recovery Center and Sage Retreat offers a staff with excellent credentials where clients can receive plenty of individualized attention and care. Recreational outings teach clients how to have fun in sobriety while they bond with their peers and the natural setting and dry climate provide a serene environment for clients to work on their recovery. In all, Hemet Valley Recovery Center and Sage Retreat is more than worth considering for a range of treatment needs.
