Located about halfway between LA and Palm Springs in Hemet, California, Hemet Center for Change is a social-model based outpatient facility for chemical dependency. Operating under Mental Health Systems, a large behavioral health organization founded in 1978, this year-long program—subcontracted through Riverside County—is geared towards addicted parents coming out of drug court who want to recover and to create safer environments for their families.
Treatment and Staff
This program is accessible by referral only, to parents with substance abuse issues, families marked for risk factors or parents with at-risk children up to 18 years old. Treatment consists of individual and group therapy using short-term, solution-focused therapy, CBT and REBT. Groups address a range of topics including anger management, domestic violence, emotional processing, life skills, family support, relapse prevention and healthy relationships. The program is co-ed but it has gender-specific groups available for both men and women. Clients are subject to regular and random drug testing during the duration of treatment. In addition to evidence-based practices, clients must attend regular 12-step meetings.
Staff is made up of LMFTs and Master’s-level therapists.
The facility has an 12-week Nurturing Families program, designed to teach life skills for healthy home environments, as well as in-house HIV/AIDS testing.
While Hemet Center for Change is limited court-ordered clientele, those who qualify are afforded the advantage of a longer-term treatment program with a focus on rebuilding families. The program employs evidence-based care, life skills and behavioral groups groups while also encouraging the development of outside 12-step support for lasting recovery.
