Located in Whittier, California, Helpline Youth Counseling Inc was created with at-risk, low income youths and families in mind. This outpatient facility provides counseling and assistance for substance abuse issues, as well as prevention and education services for delinquents and gang members. Helpline Youth Counseling offers a six month Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which includes a mix of individual and group therapy using the 12 steps as guiding principles.
Treatment and Staff
At Helpline Youth Counseling, detox is not available on-site, so those in need of this service must do so before enrolling in treatment. Clients are immersed in weekly therapy sessions that use evidence based treatment modalities. IOP meets three times a week for two and a half hours at a time. Groups meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with a range of topics discussed including relapse prevention, coping skills, healthy relationships, the 12 steps, self-esteem and anger management. In addition, clients are required to attend one individual session per week. Both CBT and DBT are used in therapy in addition to 12-step principles. However, when it comes to AA/NA outside of the program, clients are not expected to attend meetings.
As participants near the end of treatment, they also have access to a weekly aftercare group which focuses on relapse prevention. The program also offers some therapeutic support for parents of those in treatment. This is done through a weekly group, allowing parents to check in and express their feelings. The staff consists of LADCs and group sizes range from eight to 15 clients at a time.
In addition to IOP, Helpline Youth Counseling also has a community hotline for youth, a therapeutic day program for high school aged youth on probation and an after-school prevention program for at-risk adolescent females at middle schools and high schools. Prevention services include coordinated and intensive educational, therapeutic and support services for high-risk students.
Gang prevention services are available as well, including education for fourth graders in the Whittier City School District, support for gang affiliated teens through positive cognitive therapy, case management, anger management training and life skills training, parental support and parenting classes. There is also family and child abuse services, as well as a variety of community support programs.
Helpline Youth Counseling Inc offers comprehensive long-term treatment for adolescents with a variety of supplemental services. Clients are able to recover through a range of therapies and with additional family involvement. In all, Helpline Youth Counseling is a strong resource for adolescents seeking help for substance abuse.
