Helpful Hands Review
Helpful Hands is a non-profit outpatient treatment facility for substance abuse and behavioral health in Los Angeles, California. The program focuses on helping addicts, families and the community on a self-referred and court-ordered basis. Helping Hands also provides counseling for anger management, domestic violence and HIV/AIDS education and prevention services.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial assessment, clients are given an individualized treatment plan designed to best serve their needs. The main track is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which offers both day and evening sessions, Monday through Thursday. Specialized groups are available for both adolescent and older adult clients. Treatment consists of group therapy using evidence-based methods, such as CBT, and individual therapy that is scheduled on an as-needed basis.
Within the first month, clients are expected to choose an outside peer-support program to attend, like AA or NA. While some mental heath issues are addressed, clients with more severe co-occurring disorders may be better served at a facility with more comprehensive dual diagnosis support. The IOP has three main phases that decrease in intensity; each lasting 12 to 24 weeks. As clients work through the phases, groups tend to focus more on relapse prevention.
Staff consists of LPNs, LCSWs and Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Other services include a six to eight-week anger management course (generally court-ordered) that can be completed for a certificate.
For those who complete the substance abuse treatment program, aftercare is included and lasts for three to six months.

Helpful Hands offers solid treatment for drug and alcohol addiction and other related issues. With flexible hours to fit a number of schedules, its programs have a good a balance of therapeutic practices in conjunction with 12-step support. Though those with co-occurring disorders may need more comprehensive treatment, Helpful Hands is an affordable option for those in the area.
