Hello House for MenHello House for Men Review

Located in Boston, Massachusetts, Hello House for Men is a small residential treatment facility that provides longer-term care for men struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. The facility is one of many owned and operated by the larger Volunteers of America Massachusetts, itself a smaller arm of the nationwide organization Volunteers of America.

Accommodations and Food

The location is a modest, 24-bed recovery home in a quiet neighborhood in the South End of Boston. Bedrooms are shared between two to three men at a time and each have twin beds, dressers and ample closet space. The house also includes shared living room areas with cable TV, WiFi, on-site laundry and a fully-equipped kitchen. While food is supplied by the organization, all residents are expected to cook and prepare meals together for the entire house.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, clients go through an initial intake and assessment to help staff members develop their treatment plans. While detox is not available on-site, those in need can get referrals to nearby facilities. Though program lengths may differ, clients generally stay between three to six months; the average is around 95 days. During that time, they attend daily group and individual therapy that implement evidence-based practices including CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). All residents are expected to attend regular 12-step meetings throughout their stay. Though initial treatment focuses on addiction education and basic recovery skills, clients move into case management sessions where they work on life and vocational skills as well as relapse prevention. Basic dual diagnosis support is available as well, including monthly medication evaluations.

The staff at Hello House for Men consists of psychiatric nurses, LPCs, MSWs, CADCs and additional Master’s-level therapists.

Extras

Volunteers of America Massachusetts provides a range of further behavioral health programs including mental health counseling for families and children as well as sober apartments for women. Other resources include assisted living for senior citizens, veterans services and criminal re-entry programs.

In Summary

Overall, Hello House for Men is a small facility offering affordable, longer-term care for men seeking help for addiction. Programs are flexible and well-rounded with 12-step support, evidence-based care and case management services. For those in the area looking for an extended program blending treatment and life skills training, Hello House for Men is worth considering.
