Helen’s House Review

Located just outside of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, Helen’s House is an intimate, Christian-based sober living for women in the early stages of recovery from addiction. The facility allows residents a fair amount of flexibility and freedom and expects them to remain active and industrious in their professional and personal lives.

Accommodations and Amenities

Helen’s House itself is a sprawling, four-floored home with up to 18 beds available for women in 10 shared and private bedrooms. Still, these bedrooms are not always designated as private or shared and can shift depending on the house’s occupancy. Rooms come with beds of various sizes including kings, queens and full beds. Decor throughout the house is rustic and comfortable with bedrooms outfitted with wardrobes, rugs, small desks and plenty of natural light. Other parts of the home include quiet areas, common rooms with cable TV and big flat-screen TVs, shared bathrooms and two full kitchens. Throughout their stay, all clients are expected to cook and prepare their own meals.

Rules and Regulations

As with many sober livings, Helen’s House requires a balance of life inside and outside the home. Residents are required to follow a house behavioral contract and to commit to 10 hours a week in the actual home. There are mandatory Sunday night house meetings to go over procedural and personal issues. Additionally, clients are expected to spend an additional 30 hours a week going to school, working, attending outpatient therapy or volunteering. Though not all residents must be devout Christians to apply at the home, all must be open to the idea of believing.

Though the above are requirements, the house also has a number of guidelines intended to help residents in recovery. To that end, residents are encouraged to attend off-site 12-step meetings and get a sponsor, do Bible study, go to church and develop their own spiritual practices. Helen’s House is completely substance-free and offers flexible lengths of stay. As a primarily Christian and addiction-focused facility, those with severe co-occurring disorders are advised to find additional help elsewhere.

The home also comes equipped with security cameras and has full-time, live-in staff members who stay in separate quarters adjacent to the house.

Extras

Helen’s House is located near many local attractions including coffee shops, churches, 12-step meetings, parks and bus lines. Clients can work with staff to develop aftercare plans or to find permanent housing placement.

In Summary

Overall, Helen’s House provides a warm environment for women in recovery. All residents have a good balance of work, therapy and play, with a strong sense of community with the other clients in the program. The house itself is spacious and comfortable and is centrally located to many local businesses and institutions. While those in need of intensive psychiatric or medical supervision may want to seek additional aid, Helen’s House remains a strong sober living option for those open to a Christian-based recovery process.
