Hegira ResidentialHegira Programs Residential Review

Hegira Programs Inc. (HPI), a nonprofit organization established in 1971, has provided behavioral health and substance abuse treatment for over 10,000 clients a year in Wayne County, Michigan. HPI offers detox and short-term residential treatment in addition to a variety of outpatient programs for adults in one of the largest freestanding facilities in the region.

Accommodations and Food

The detox at HPI is a 24 hour medically monitored program for adults 18 and up. The length of stay is between three to five days, and is overseen by medical staff to ensure the clients’ safety. During the detox process a caseworker will assess the clients individual needs and may suggest moving directly from detox into the short residential treatment program offered at the facility. This free standing, one story building can house up to 45 adult men and women in dorm-style accommodations. The genders are in separate wings and rooms hold two to five people at a time, with shared bathrooms.

The living quarters are very basic, with the intention that clients focus on recovery without the distractions of the outside world. Smoking is allowed in designated areas outside of the facility, but otherwise residents stay inside on the grounds during their stay. Personal devices, like cell phones or computers are not allowed while in treatment. There are common areas in the facility where clients can read, relax and occasionally watch TV, but since the stay is for such a short time, down time is for focused reflection.

Food is brought in from an institutional catering company daily and residents dine together. Meals lean towards the healthy side, but don’t adhere to any particular diet. Special dietary restrictions can only be accommodated upon doctor’s orders.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment combines elements of the 12 steps combined with the Stages of Change model. The intention is to focus on and modify the individual patterns of thinking and behaviors that lead to substance abuse. In a group therapy setting, relapse prevention and psycho-education are a major part of treatment. Daily lectures and classes about the physical and emotional impact of addiction are integrated into the approach. HPI believes that clients thrive when the personal desire to achieve sobriety is present and including family support in that equation leads to success.

Most of treatment is in a group setting, which can vary in size, but does not exceed 10 clients at a time per therapist. If individual therapy is desired or clearly something the client would benefit from, that is also readily available.  Clients with co-occurring conditions have access to a specialized group and may require additional individual sessions. Medication management is available for those who need it.

Staff at HPI is experienced and accommodating, consisting of psychiatrists, psychologists, CSWs, LADCs, case managers and recovery coaches. All the staff is highly experienced in addiction and co-occurring conditions.

Extras

A family program is integrated on a weekly basis, including a multi-family group. Clients also have the option to participate in expressive therapies, like a poetry group and weekly art therapy.

Aftercare planning is part of the treatment plans and often leads to clients beginning an Intensive Outpatient (IOP) program after leaving residential treatment.

In Summary

Residential treatment at HPI is basic for a reason, so that clients are encouraged to go focus on treatment and emerge stronger. While there is no five star cuisine, day spa trips or massage therapists on call, the treatment is affordable, thorough and effective, boasting a high graduation rate.
