Effingham IllinoisHeartland Human Services Review

Located in the home of America’s largest cross, Effingham, Illinois, Heartland Human Services has been offering community counseling for addiction and mental health issues since the 1960s. The acility offers assessments, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and general outpatient programming, as well as family therapy. Focusing on relapse prevention and evidence-based therapies, clients are guided towards what is hopefully long-term sobriety and recovery.

Treatment and Staff

Heartland Human Services offers outpatient care to adults and adolescents for substance abuse. Priority is given to pregnant women. Detox and residential care are not available.

The IOP meets three times a week for three-hour sessions each time. The program includes individual and group therapy. Individual sessions are an hour long each and usually occur once a week, though more can be added when necessary. Topics covered during group sessions include relapse prevention, 12-step principles and life skills. Evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) are used as well. Clients are not required to attend AA/NA meetings outside of the program, though they are free to do so if they wish. The length of time spent in IOP varies by individual.

Once the IOP has been completed, the client can step down to general outpatient. This program follows a similar structure to IOP, but meets with less frequency. Typically, clients come for one to three one-hour sessions per week. This includes individual and/or group therapy. The length of time spent in this program depends on each individual’s needs.

One-on-one sessions can be done in conjunction with group, or as its own form of treatment. These 60-minute sessions delve into the underlying issues of addiction. The frequency of individual therapy depends on the individual. Typically, the client will start out with one session per week and gradually decrease over time.

The staff consists of LADCs and social workers. Group sizes vary from eight to 12 clients at a time.

Extras

As previously mentioned, Heartland Human Services also provides opportunities for families to be involved with treatment. Through family therapy, clients and their loved ones can work on establishing healthy boundaries, as well as have a chance to process emotions in a safe space.

Additional services include intervention programs and prevention services such as presentations, life skills, leadership training and community groups.

In Summary

Heartland Human Services offers quality outpatient care at an affordable price. Through consistent therapy, clients are able to get to the root of their issues. Thanks to evidence-based therapies, new thought patterns are created. Overall, this a solid traditional outpatient program for those interested in an alternative to the 12-steps.
