Heartland CenterThe Heartland Center Review

The Heartland Center has been providing medically monitored detox and residential treatment programs for those struggling with substance abuse since 1982. Headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, The Heartland Center provides services for residents of the greater Kansas City area, as well as across southwest Missouri. The center extended its programs to include behavioral healthcare services, and changed its name from the Kansas City Community Center in 2013.

Accommodations and Food

The Heartland Center accommodates 72 men and women, two to a room. Private rooms are not available, and clients are housed in gender-specific areas. The center is not a lockdown facility, but no electronics, including no TV and no phone, are permitted. All meals are provided, and are prepared on-site by staff. Residents eat cafeteria-style in the dining room and most dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

The Heartland Center’s treatment plans vary in intensity; from the inpatient program, which provides 25 hours a week of planned therapeutic sessions, to the outpatient program, which provides a point of contact for clients just several times a month. Potential clients are offered a free assessment to determine what the best course of treatment would be for them. Those who begin with medically monitored detox program receive 24/7 supervision and support. Clients are cared for by doctors and nurses, with a counselor and chaplain assigned to each person. Most people remain in detox for an average of five days, and then continue the 30-day residential program.

Dual diagnosis support is not provided, but clients are offered medication management for existing diagnoses. Treatment plans consist of small group therapy daily, individual therapy weekly, 12-step meetings on and off-site, guidance through the 12 Steps and psycho-education lectures. Family counseling is also available weekly. Community support assistance, including help finding employment after completing the program, and self-help groups are useful tools to which The Heartland Center also provides access.

The staff of Heartland includes physicians, nurse practitioners, case managers who are LCSWs and CADCs.

Extras

Heartland Center provides services to individuals who have had an alcohol or drug-related traffic offense. The Substance Abuse Traffic Offenders Program (SATOP) serves people who are referred as a result of a suspension of their drivers’ license, court order, condition of probation or plea bargain. There are several tracks that range from a 48-hour weekend program for first-time offenders to an intensive 75 hour, 90-day protocol.

In Summary

The Heartland Center provides essential medically monitored detox services for those in and around Kansas City. With many outpatient and detox facilities across Missouri, The Heartland Center also provides individualized treatment plans for residential clients. The key element to the program is guidance through the 12 Steps, so those who are opposed to this style of treatment will want to keep looking. However, the 12-step emphasis ensures clients have a strong spiritual foundation before leaving the program. For those open to this approach to treatment, The Heartland Center provides a supportive environment from which to find recovery.
