Healthcare Connection of Tampa Review

Located in Tampa, Florida, Healthcare Connection of Tampa is not a quick-fix type of rehab. This 60- to 90-day program offers residential care for substance abuse in addition to providing support for trauma and co-occurring disorders. While some facilities lump clients of all backgrounds and ages into one group, this program offers specialized tracks that target gender, age and career professionals. The Healthcare Professionals Program specifically serves doctors and health care professionals including nurses and pharmacists.

The focus on health care professionals reflects founder David P. Myers’ own personal experience. A physician and anesthesiologist with a thriving practice, Myers developed a chemical dependency of his own and afterwards redirected his career to help other professionals with substance abuse issues. A number of the professional staff are also in recovery.

Accommodations and Food

The facility consists of three sections: the main building and the gender-separated men’s and women’s villages. Clients are housed in comfortable apartment complexes, with three or four people to an apartment. The two-bedroom spaces include a bathroom, living room and modern kitchen. Activities and treatment take place in the main building, which has therapy rooms, a lecture hall and offices. The detox clinic is also located here. Smoking is permitted in designated areas during break time.

Clients are required to cook their own meals as a part of life skills training. Each week, they are given an allowance for grocery store outings and they can prepare the meals they want at home. Occasionally, there are group breakfasts or dinners.

Clients have access to a small weight room during breaks and the women’s program offers weekly yoga classes. Outdoor walks offer a way to unwind.

Treatment and Staff

Admission requires an initial evaluation to determine a client’s needs.

Residential treatment typically lasts between 60 and 90 days. Clients attend individual therapy once a week, 12-step work and family counseling. Groups are relatively small,  between 10 and 15 people for each track, and cover a range of relevant topics that vary depending on the track. Subjects for all groups include emotional well-being, relapse prevention, self-esteem, coping skills, trauma and the 12 steps. Neurofeedback is used in an individual setting, helping to retrain the brainwaves and alter brain chemistry.

The track for professionals includes discussions of issues relevant to their careers.  The women’s track addresses sexuality, abuse and parenting. The track for clients in their 20s tackles age-appropriate topics.

12-step work is integrated into all therapy. Clients may also attend several AA or NA meetings a week, which allows them to integrate into a recovery-based community post-treatment. While sponsorship is not required, it is highly suggested once treatment has ended.

Dual diagnosis is available in addition to medication management for those who need it. Medically-monitored detox is available and is included in the monthly fee.

The staff includes nurses, doctors, psychiatrists, therapists and counselors. Credentials include PhD, MRO, ABAM, CAP, MA, MHC and MFT.

Extras

The family program invites family members in for weekly support groups, family counseling and an intensive therapeutic weekend for the client and family. The goal is to teach family members about the nature of addiction in addition to coping skills and healthy communication.

The evening program is an outpatient option that may include  12-step work and group, individual and family therapy. The length of the program depends on the individual’s needs.

The women’s program offers a weekly yoga class.

In Summary

Healthcare Connection of Tampa offers specialized tracks that cater to the individual needs of each client. With strong dual diagnosis support and a comprehensive family program, this affordable facility has a lot to offer, especially to healthcare professionals who are experiencing chemical dependency issues.
